BYU turned the ball over the first five times it had the ball, with freshman quarterback Tanner Mangum throwing three interceptions and fumbling once.

That was all the scoring Utah did, and it nearly cost the Utes the game. Mangum would bring BYU back, throwing two touchdown passes and rushing for another to get the Cougars close.

Mangum's shaky start didn't stop him from throwing for 315 yards in rallying his team. BYU dominated much of the game, but couldn't quite dig itself out of the big hole.

Utah (10-3) came in as a 2-point favorite in the first meeting since 2013 of schools that have campuses just 46 miles from each other. But the quick succession of turnovers -- Utah scored its first four touchdowns in a span of 3:30 -- threatened to turn the game into a rout before BYU settled down.

BYU ended up with 386 yards to 197 for Utah, but the five early turnovers were the key in a game where the Utes didn't turn the ball over at all.

Mangum, who earlier this season led the Cougars to last-minute comebacks against Nebraska and Boise State, never had a chance to do the same against the Utes. After bringing them within a touchdown with 3:23 left, he could only watch on the sideline as the Utes picked up two first downs and ran out the clock.

BYU was down largely because of the early mistakes by the freshman, who lost a ball while scrambling on the third play of the game, then threw interceptions on the next three drives. Coming into the game, Mangum had thrown just seven picks all year.

Yeah, it had nothing to do with Utah's gameplan, their D-Line's ability to get to Mangum at-will against an outclassed O-Line, their playmakers on defense, or the fact that their Offense didn't settle for FG's after turnovers and continually punched it into the end zone.

I just mentioned the "Yeah But" posts that seem to spew from BYU fan after every loss to Utah and like clockwork, Fish comes in and doesn't let me down. See you guys in September. #6straight

Not my words or even a byu fans words lol.

I have not witnessed many of those games in this rivalry. But occasionally that type of thing does happen. Even in games that don't involve byu or utah.

I'm willing to bet that there have even been games that Utah played better than byu and still lost to byu. Football is pretty crazy!
 
I'm 100% certain that if I were a ute fan I would have said that it was an ugly win that I felt lucky to escape with. And I wouldn't care. A win is a win no matter what.

I would also say that if the game wouldn't have started that way that my team would have played it differently (not taken their foot off the gas, and not played so conservatively) and still would have won. Especially considering the recent domination by the utes.

I would much much rather win that game the way utah did than lose it the way byu did. 100 times out of 100

Obviously it's possible for BYU to win a game vs Utah here sooner or later. However, as much of a homer as Green is (and he really, really is), he actually lays out a pretty compelling case as to why BYU will struggle to have this year be the year they finally break through.

Btw, I think its fair for Ute fans to puff their chest out a little bit and basically take a "I'll believe it when I see it" approach when it comes to losing to BYU. Every year we're forced to hear "This is the year" drivel from BYU fan and every year after Utah beats them yet again, we're forced to listen to all the "Yeah, buts..." from a zombie headed fanbase that's NEVER lost a game to Utah graciously.

Green really does lay out a great argument. I'm truly not expecting a BYU win this year. WAY too much inexperience in the coaching staff.
But, Utah will be breaking in a new QB (in arguably the midst important position on the field), so for him to say there is absolutely zero chance is absurd.

It's funny cause I see so many ute fans talking about how byu fans are always saying byu is the best and are going to be undefeated and are always such homers and apologists and whatnot.

Yet I never see those types of posts by actual byu fans on this site. Weird.
Instead I see posters like you and I giving the utes credit and often downplaying byu and being very realistic.
 
Yogi Roth picked Utah to win the south. So has Ted Miller from ESPN.

I can't wait to see our OL play. And our DL. They will be nasty. Lotulelei, Fitts both have early round potential. Dimick and Pita T has NFL potential. Maxs Tupai is on the depth chart as a true freshman and Chris Hart will be amazing.

I'll post more when I get on a computer.

Huh, I have honestly never been on there.

I go to a site called cougarfan but only for the newsfeed part of it. I don't do the message board part.

Maybe I will go take a look and lol about it.
