Official UofU homer thread

Yogi Roth picked Utah to win the south. So has Ted Miller from ESPN.

I can't wait to see our OL play. And our DL. They will be nasty. Lotulelei, Fitts both have early round potential. Dimick and Pita T has NFL potential. Maxs Tupai is on the depth chart as a true freshman and Chris Hart will be amazing.

I'll post more when I get on a computer.

This team has potential that's for sure. I just wonder if the offense will be good enough to get Whittingham over the hump. There is still big question marks at Qb and Wr

Why you should be worried as a Utah fan:

Basically one thing. The OL is solid at worst. The RB's are solid at worst. The WR's are ok. The DL is top 10 in the country at worst. The LB'ers are average at worst. The secondary is top 25 at worst. Special teams are top 10 at worst.

Utah's worries begin and end at QB.

Right now, we have no QB. What have three options:

Brandon Cox. Here is a kid with potential. He doesn't have an NFL arm, but it is good enough. He can run. His issues come down to one thing: He's never been healthy. He has potential to be a very solid QB. Think of a better throwing Kendall Thompson. BUT, can he stay healthy? Also, he tends to get lazy on some throws and throw INT's.

Tyler Huntley - Florida Gatorade Player of the Year. But a true Freshman. You don't want true freshman playing. We know that better than anyone. Their bodies aren't right. Their heads aren't right. They turn the ball over. If he starts, Utah is screwed. Not end of the world screwed, but likely 7 wins screwed.

Troy Williams - He was a 4 star QB out of high school and the #1 dual threat QB out of high school. He went to Washington to play for Sark. Sark was fired, Petersen comes in. They run two very different QB systems. Williams started one game in a monsoon and didn't do great. He then transferred to Santa Monica College and was unreal. When he was recruited out of high school, he was listed at a dual threat QB. When he was recruited out of JC, he was listed as a pocket passer. The potential is there.

Here is where he goes wrong: Turnovers.

Utah is a weird situation. Utah doesn't need a QB to win 9-10 games. They need someone to hand the ball off and stay out of the defense's way. What they need out of their QB is to not turn the ball over. If that happens, they win 8-10 games. If Williams, who will be the starter, has a lot of turnovers, Utah is screwed.

Utah has one position of real need and that is QB. And that is the big mystery. We have three QB's, all have potential to be very good. None have done anything. What can they do? That will make the difference between 7 wins and a lot more.

Here is why you be excited if you are a Utah fan:

Your defense and special teams are both top 10 worthy. Your DL is top 3 in the country, and your secondary that was #3 last year in INT's? They all come back.

Andy Phillips comes back. He is a top 3 kicker in the country. Mitch Wishnowsky looks legit. While he doesn't have Hackett's personality or accuracy, he has a stronger leg that has more hang time and more yards. Utah's return game is always legit. Smithson, Dunn, Clay, Covey, Butler-Byrd. All Whitt does is score TD's off returns.

OL: Your offensive line may be the best in the PAC-12. You return 4 starters and a 5 star JC recruit in Bolles, who seems to be every bit as good as anyone could hope. Your QB will have time and Joe Williams will have holes to run through.

WR: You can't be worse than last year. Holliday has come over from BYU. He helped BYU have a much, much better passing game despite having less talent. And before anyone says BYU's receivers are better, look at this. Since the PAC-12, these NFL receivers have gone through Utah: Josh Gordon, Dres Anderson, Kaelin Clay. These are current NFL WR's that played at BYU: ...

We have talent at WR at Utah. Tim Patrick has NFL potential. Butler-Byrd looks to be a bigger, faster Covey (although maybe not as elusive). Smith will be better than he was last year. Siosi Wilson has potential. Alec Dana just arrived on campus. Singleton has an NFL body and hands...but can't stay healthy. We have potential at WR. Nothing proven, but there is potential. The cupboard may not be as bare as people say.

RB: Joe Williams came in and continued what Booker did, averaging 133 yards per game. You return McCormick, who was slated to be your backup last year. You also add Armand Shyne this fall, who is a very good JC guy, and all Whitt does is take JC guys and turn them into pros.

QB: Troy Williams. He was the #1 dual threat QB out of high school. He played out of his mind at the JC level. He is a natural leader. Coach Petersen said this about him: If Williams isn't your starter, then your QB will be on an elite level because Williams is top level talent. Petersen also said that Williams was one of the best leaders he has been around. Not only does Williams not turn the ball over, he throws very well from the pocket. He averaged 275 yards, 3 TD's and 0 INT's per game. All you need from him is 225 yards, 2 TD's and less than 1 INT to win the south.

There are a couple of extremes for Utah this fall.

I agree don't turn the ball over. Wilson got better at that even though his production was still awful. We should expect better production from the QB's this year.

These are current NFL WR's that played at BYU: ...
Jordan Leslie is currently with the falcons, Mitch matthews is currently with the chiefs, terren houk is currently with the bears, and Cody hoffman was with the redskins two years ago.
Those are the ones that I can remember off the top of my head.
Just wanted finish your sentence for you.

I have been hearing great things about that o-lineman transfer for the utes. Sounds like the utes got a great one.

Not one of those guys has played or been on active rosters. IF you want to count those three than I could add Utes to the list. And, ours have actually made active rosters. But this is off the point. The point is, Utah has talent at WR. Now they have a coach that did very good things with equal or less talent at BYU. Also, didn't Holliday allude to having less talent at BYU earlier this year?

Yeah, Bolles seems to be legit. I'm excited to see him maul some people.

They are current nfl wide receivers that played at byu.
So your post was wrong. If you want to move the goal posts then that's fine.

Reading this thread makes me long for the (all too brief) era in which we didn't play each other. Seriously, I was as happy as a Ute fan could be without BYU on the schedule, and no BYU fan, I don't mean that as an insult.

Our schedule was fine and our seasons were fufilling without BYU and the last I checked, BYU's program and fans seemed to survive just fine without Utah. This rivalry has jumped the shark.

Im with ya. I have stated many times that I hate the rivalry and wish they would never play each other.

Or people could just not be assholes to each other simply because they cheer for a different team. But that probably won't ever change so I would love for the rivalry game to go away.

Of course even when they didn't play each other fans couldn't help themselves from talking **** about the other team anyway.

Sigh.

(In before naos posts something insulting about the fact that I care about people and how they treat each other)

Utah was once again ranked in the top 100 schools in the world. Not too shabby for our little commuter school. Utah was ranked 66, almost the sexiest number out there.

From the CWUR site:

The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) publishes the only global university ranking that measures the quality of education and training of students as well as the prestige of the faculty members and the quality of their research without relying on surveys and university data submissions.

That last bit is kind of important because you can easily manipulate other rankings by, I don't know, say making your university so cheap to attend that you artificially inflate your entrance scores and also cause your surveys to be more favorable. I don't know anyone that would need to do that, buuuuuttttt, it is a very important distinction compared to other ranking systems out there.

Fixed that for ya. Now it's more accurate.

Just realized green negged me for this. Aweomeness. Coming from him, that means I'm spot on.

Utah has a alumni team in the basketball tournament, Dakari Tucker is playing on it. They beat Gonzaga's alumni team today(whose team page said John Stockton was the coach, but he wasn't there, although his son David was playing for them)

utah team page - https://www.thetournament.com/teams/team-utah-utah-alumni

wonder what Luke Nevill is up to these days, should have got him

The Gonzaga team was seeded #3, Utah was seeded #7. Not too shabby.

I negged you because you added nothing intelligent to the conversation. Your post was a troll post, so I treated you as such. If you have an issue or disagree with one of my statements, tell us why. But adding nothing to the conversation and doing nothing but being a bitch...well, you got negged for that.

If you think I over-rate coaching experience say so. If you think our OL or DL isn't as good as I say, say so. If you think our WR's sill suck, say so. If you think our LB'ers will give up huge rushing yards every game, say so.

Doing what you did, is nothing more than being a complete jerkoff. A troll. That's fine. You want to be a troll, you'll get treated like one. If you want to add to the conversation, add to it and let's have a discussion.

Also, I actually just read your post. It's disgusting. To compare those kids to rapists and murders?!? What the hell is wrong with you?

Your post was disgusting. I'd be ashamed if I was you.

Adding something intelligent to the conversation is the standard on this forum? Since when? If that were the car, this site wouldn't exist.
