What's new

Official UofU homer thread

It was the first game, so I won't read too much into it.
I will take away the fact that Troy wants to throw it down the field, and that those big receivers from 6-2 to 6-5 will help with that.
Patrick will be good for Troy to cut him slack if his throws aren't spot on at times.

The defense looked good, other than the fact that there were more 9+ yard plays than I expected.
Marcus Williams is a beast, and legit.

The game was a glorified scrimmage with the Utes playing vanilla on both sides of the ball. No hand was tipped, no questions were answered, and no concerns were raised for me. Williams was okay. Huntley has a better arm and when he spends some time in the weight room will be a beast.

My concern was the Oline. Even when playing vanilla and trying not to tip your hand, no reason you cannot control the line of scrimmage vs an FBS opponent. SUU was in our backfield for an alarming amount of the night.

That being said, I think Troy Williams was more than okay and the WR's had the look of what can be a better than average unit. If they can get the Oline to play better this week, things will go as planned.

I didn't watch the BYU game. How did they manage to just squeak out a victory against a team with a defensive line stocked with midgets?

Those midgets have had our number though, can't really say much except congrats to Kalani & BYU. After the game he said he was proud to call Utah a rival.

Yes. One good thing for BYU this year finally is that this game won't be treated by the coaching staff as "just another game".
Hopefully they will be fired up for once.
Kalani was very respectful. I hope that is the direction this rivalry is headed. Respect, but lots of fire.

Agreed. That's a great way to put it, Jazz Spazz.

While I still have quite a few concerns stemming from what we saw vs SUU, when was the last time Whittingham didn't have his team ready for BYU?

All of my concerns are still there, but I think it's fair to say Whitt has earned my faith, so I think we'll be ok. Just as long as this doesn't come down to Andy Phillips.

Bought my uncles tickets to the BYU and USC games while he's in Australia, this week of work is going to be so slow.

BYU going to stomp Utah next week lmao.

Just think what they're going to do to MS ST, man that game should be their easiest game of the season going off week 1. Too bad the Utes aren't smart enough to schedule MS ST for the first game of the year, I mean if all the U really wanted is a useless tune up automatic win game.

Some tidbits from the paper - Utah hasn't hosted BYU since 2012(time flies).
Since 1997 15 of the 18 games have been decided by 7 points or less.
But the blowouts have all been in favor of the Utes.

I for one am not expecting a blowout. I think BYU does have a slight advantage having already played a tough game.
Taysom Hill looked pretty good late in that game. Arizona doesn't have the defense of Utah but still.
As per Utah-BYU something bat**** crazy will probably happen.
But make no mistake I believe Utah will be ready for this one and will win by a touchdown.

BYU has to keep it close early or it will turn into one of those rare blowouts. They gave up nearly 200 yards in the 4th qtr vs Zona which is an obvious indicator of depth issues and your front line talent being gassed. In fact, if BYU hopes to win this game I think they have to jump on Utah by a couple of scores because I think Utah is just too much for them as the game wears on.

Hmm, hopefully Fitzgerald steps up before then. The good news is that BYU relies on a running game and the one thing Miss St. is still good at is having a solid front 7.

But yeah, I expect to lose, especially if they look bad again. Kind of willing to draw the USA game up to a fluke, but I'm not hopeful.

Zona is one of those teams that can explode on offense like they did in the 4th but I get what you are saying.

I'm doubting BYU jumps on Utah early, unless we turn the ball over a bunch of times. Expecting a low scoring first half like a 10-7 score wouldn't shock me.

I think you're probably right and I'm very comfortable with a close game. I think one thing that even BYU fans have to agree with is that Utah has a pretty big advantage when it comes to depth. When you have a depth disparity, you almost always see that play out as the game wears on. Also, I'm not saying Utah runs away from BYU but I think it's one of those rare occasions that if Whitt can bury them, he will. If they find themselves in that position, a statement needs to be made that not that much has changed with the hiring of Sitake. You wanna show recruits, your team, and the opposing team that the gap is not as narrow as they think it is. Also, Whitt can be a vindictive prick (ask Joe Glenn). Both sides are saying the right things in the media, but you don't think Whitt feels burned after Sitake left him in a lateral move to OSU? Do you think Sitake would have made that lateral move if he felt warm and fuzzy about Whitt? I think there's more hurt feelings between these two than they are letting on.
