Official UofU homer thread

Winning a game with 42 passing yards, and only allowing 100 passing yards, is really impressive.

Utah doing a great job of taking advantage of a down year for the PAC-12 by just playing ugly as possible. They will go the entire year with only playing 1 ranked team.

In the first half the weather dictated the play calling, in the 2nd half the coaches didn't adjust to the better weather or adjust anything at all...... unless you count running the ball even more an adjustment.

Love the aggressive going for it on 4th down, however when you call the same play that's no longer a aggressive decision it's a stupid one, they had 4 yrds of offense in the 3rd Qtr all on the same play, dive up the middle, now sometimes there was a pretend (no real threat) QB option to keep it but I'm not joking when I say that was just about the only play they called and the only running play called. That is also the only play called when going for it on 4th down, so as you can tell by the 4yrd 3rd Qtr how well that same play worked.

I'm going to finish off the chemical lobotomy watching this game started so I can hopefully erase this game from my memory and my eyes.

The passing game was just....

well we won. the whittingham way. oregon state might not win another game the rest of the season.

The last 5 games are going to be a meat grinder for Utah. There's just been too many injuries. It's been crazy. I hate to say it, but I think 2-3 is about the best they can hope for.

Pac 12 depth though.

And I thought the BYU MSU game was ugly.
Neither team wanted to win this thing, but OSU wanted it less.
It almost got ugly there at the end too.

That retired/unretired rb came through though. He won that game.

A win is a win. Grats

Given our injuries, I'd be tickled pink with 2-3 the rest of the way. If we win 3, I'll be doing back flips. If we win 4, I'll have a fangasm. If we win 5... nuclear explosion of my noggin'.

To be fair the weather was horrendous. Wind and rain together make for the worst weather to pass the football. It was an ugly win and as a Ute fan I'm not happy with the performance. But in that weather take the win and don't look back. No point in looking back your unlikely to play in weather that bad again.

Yeah like I said it was impressive.

I would most definitely not be tickled pink with 2-3 finish. Injuries are not a good enough excuse. We still should be able to best UCLA, AZ St., and Oregon this year. We should be 9-2 headed into the Colorado game imo. Still unsure where to put my expectations in regards to Colorado. We should have a better idea after they play Stanford this weekend.

OK, to reply....

Absolutely. I am however interested to hear your side of the subject. I understand why you believe it would be better for the state as a whole, but I'm interested to hear a Ute fan perspective on how you feel it would benefit Utah directly and if you don't feel it benefits the U of U, are you ok with it possibly having a negative effect on the program that you root for?

I get where you're coming from. It's primarily a concern about recruiting. But I'm just saying as someone who has been active LDS in the past, and is no longer so now, that the religious element will have a lot more sway with recruits than anything else. I'm not saying we don't compete with them, but I think it's less about the program, the facilities, the education, the pro opportunities - and it's more about the religious institution element.

Kids that want to go to BYU will go to BYU. Heck, even Harvey Langi found his way back to BYU eventually. Which would be the case whether or not BYU was in a P5 program or not. I don't think them getting into a P5 program would all of a sudden make them THAT much more competition for athletes. An increase? Yes. A huge, massive increase? No. The cultures are just too different. But again, that is my opinion and I understand if you don't feel the same.

As far as how it benefits the U, I think it definitely would. I think the rivalry game would gain more relevance again, which is a good thing. Having a rivalry game with a P5 school is a heckuva lot better for the U's rankings, SOS, etc. than an independent or a G5 school. Since the rivalry game doesn't go anywhere, why not make it more significant? Greater TV revenue, greater stakes... and we are definitely in a much better position than BYU to take advantage of the rewards of that increase, and will continue to do so regardless of whether they get into a P5 conference or not. There is a ceiling to their recruiting because of the culture and religious nature of the institution. We will now and forever be above that ceiling, no matter what conference - or lack thereof - that BYU is in.

Alt13, JazzSpazz's response to you in the BYU thread is one that I agreed with. There was no point to two Utah fans going off on each other in the BYU Homer thread. That's why I moved it over here. And my "agree to disagree" was because I can see the logic behind his argument. I don't know that I can convince him otherwise. But he's not going to convince me otherwise. So where's the harm in acknowledging that two people can disagree and it's OK? Your attitude kind of sucks, dude.

I can see where you're coming from. I guess I just have my doubts about UCLA. Maybe that doubt is due to the history of the program and the tough time we've had with them. But if Rosen doesn't play... you're absolutely right, we should beat UCLA. But I'm also wary because both UCLA and AZ. St. are on the road. I could see us losing one of them simply because winning on the road in this conference is tough to do.

Prediction: We will go 3-2 the rest of the way and just miss out on the Pac 12 title game, again.

9-3 is a really good season, but would be frustrating to miss another chance to win the South.

Yeah we could lose those games but I won't be tickled pink about it if we do.

Even if I disagree with some of your thoughts, all your points are valid. I think where we differ the most is that I don't think the rivalry game can ever be restored to what it was (and I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing). Regardless of whether BYU is P5 or Indy, that game will never have the same weight to it as long as they are not in the same conference. I think that's a fact none of us can dispute. After seeing Utah drop BYU for 2 seasons in favor of Michigan, it only furthered my belief that life can be pretty good for Utah without BYU.

Again, not trying to change your mind, but with BYU getting left at the P5 alter yet again, I like the position it puts Utah in within the state.

Even though some of you piss me off a little with your trolling of the BYU thread, I hope you exceed expectations despite the injuries and win the division. It's good for the state and therefore K have no desire not to see it happen. And the point about the rivalry game, spot on. Without being in the same conference it doesn't carry much weight other than bragging rights. I do miss the days when it essentially decided the conference champ though.

Utes injuries are pretty unreal. Feel bad for the team but its pretty cool that they still have a great record and chance at a great season despite the injuries.

That osu game was about as crappy of a game to watch as i have ever seen but at least it was nice to see my boy in the backfield again and looking good carrying the rock.

Before the season began my two favorite utes were joe williams and tim patrick. Nice to see Joe out there looking good.
(As the season has went on i have now have three favorite utes as i have taken a liking to hobbs. Honorable mention to the punter who would make my list but doesnt because i was a huge fan of hackett and its just too soon to start being a homer for another ute punter already. Btw is hackett in the nfl? if not then its a travesty)
