What's new

Official UofU homer thread

Man, Utah looked like a different team out there tonight with Barefield and Collette. I know PVAMUSKANDU sucked, but still, that was a fun game. Let's go win that Hawaii tourney now.

Whoops. I was saying Bealer above and I meant Barefield.

Ya, they did look like a different team.

Green, were you there too? I can't remember if you said you'd be there or not.

It was fun to watch.

I was going to be there. Got called into work. I'll definitely be there with the wife and kids on NY Day vs Colorado. I'm super excited.

How is the bball team doing so far anyway? Are they a tourney team in your opinion?

Just my opinion, but without them there's no way they are a tourney team. With them? I certainly think it gets them in the conversation but with a piss poor nonconference slate, and losses to the 2 good teams that they actually did manage to schedule, they have their work cut out for them in conference play and that may be an understatement. They have to make some serious hay in the PAC 12.

Thanks for the response.

And if it makes you feel any better, I don't think byu has much of a chance at all of getting in.

My knowledge of the BYU team is admittedly low this year, but I did hear all the hype leading up to your returning Lone Peak kids and of course have seen this team referred to as a future Final 4 team by some fans. I've watched them once this year, against Weber State. Maybe I looked at them with red goggles on or maybe they simply need a year or two to hit full potential but what I saw was a group of kids that didn't really impress me anymore than Utah has. My exact thought was: "This is the group that Coach K was allegedly afraid of facing this year in Provo"?

Another question, does the state of Utah produce the goofiest looking basketball players in the nation? Back in the Majerus days, its seemed like all the in-state kids came straight out of "The Hills Have Eyes", and it looks like BYU's 2016 squad is no different. Seriously, that's the ugliest basketball team I've ever seen. Ever. Especially that Haws kid. Every time I'd glance at my TV and his face was on the screen I would get startled.

Ya they were, and still are, very hyped. But its for good reason. The lone peak 3 were all very very good high school players.
TJ haws teams won 4 straight state titles (was a starter all 4 years as well). He is probably the most successful utah high school player of all time.
Eric Mika was fanstastic as a freshman and is tearing it up this season (there is talk of him leaving after this year. I dont think it will happen but his play so far opens up the possibility)
Nick Emery was really really good last year. He has been very disappointing this season.
One of those years with all three guys on lone peak iirc they were one of the top teams in the entire nation.
Yoeli Childs was a very good high school player as well (I believe he was the #1 rated player in utah last year) and has been very good so far this year.
Elijah bryant is another guy who I have heard is supposed to be quite good though i know very little about him or why he had any hype.
Payton Daystrup is supposed to be pretty darn good too but is out of shape after coming off his mission.

I think that in the future this team should be really really good. Final 4 is too lofty of an expectation imo but they should definitely win a few ncca tourney games in the coming years.

This year they are not ready. Too young.
The roster consists of: Junior, freshman, sophomore, freshman, freshman, senior, sophomore, freshman, junior, freshman, junior, freshman, sophomore, senior, sophomore. So only two seniors and neither one are considered one of their top players.
Plus a handful of them are coming off missions and getting back into shape and shaking off the rust.

I thought they would be better than they are currently but definitely expected some growing pains.

And regarding their appearance..... They are a really ugly group. TJ haws is as ugly as it gets. His face, body, hair, everything. Eric mika looks mentally challenged. Nick emery has a horrible widows peak and elf ears. Payton daystrup has the worst haircut i have ever seen and looks kinda like sloth from goonies plus he is fat.

Definitely a motley crew of ugly dudes.

Domo is an idiot.

Maybe. Or maybe he is a kid that has lived more life than most of us will ever live and to ask a kid to act like a mature adult when he has never had a good role model before a couple years ago...

He has his degree. He has kept his nose clean. He was screwed over by the system here in Utah.

I hope he keeps fighting. He should be in prison right now or dead. But, he is a college graduate. He has a future. Football is really not important at this point.

He is a resounding success. I hope he keeps on his path towards success and doesn't derail after how far he has come.

So, a six ft four black guy robs someone.

Domo, who is five foot nine gets arrested for it because he is the first black guy to come around.

I'd bet that if a six ft four white guy robbed someone and then a few hours later a five foot nine white guy came by, the shorter white would not have been arrested.

I get it, but let's be completely honest here: If you look at all the evidence, I think it's fair to say that it seems that Domo was involved in the Craigslist scam with some accomplices to some degree. I don't think he's a complete innocent in what went down but the right thing was done and charges were eventually dropped on the robbery.

Yeah, I don't think Domo was guilt free in all this.

That being said, the way he was treated and the way the cops handled all of it was 100% wrong. I don't believe that if everything else was the same but Domo was white, it would have gone down the same way.

I think there are real issues between black people and cops. And I think fault lies on both sides. Both need to do better. The sad reality is, that won't happen on its own. One side will have to humble themselves, take the high road and be better first.

And, I believe that responsibility lies with the cops.

How they treated Domo falls into every horrible stereotype of how cops treat black people. It was very unfortunate. It's also why Domo got off scott free even though he had stolen phones and admitted to breaking the law.

Had the cops treated Domo like a white guy instead of a black guy, they probably could have gotten a guilty verdict.

So, put yourself in Domo's shoes. With his background, his neighborhoods, his friends being killed far too often and far too recently...You get involved in some stuff that isn't top shelf stuff...and you get caught. You do what is right at that point and admit to what you've done...but, you get treated just how your friends and family told you would get treated if you moved to good old white Utah.

Domo could have gone off the deep end at that point. But he didn't. He battled back. He owned up, paid his price, and became a team captain. Got his degree. Was a starter on a team that was top 15 at one point.

That's pretty damn impressive.

If his biggest fault was leaving practice early for a game that is 100% meaningless to his future...

I'll take that any day of the week.

I just hope he keeps fighting. I hope he doesn't just go home and revert back to what he could have been and wastes his degree and all he has learned up to this point.

So far, Domo is a HUGE success story. He is what college athletics is all about.

Now, it's up to him to go get a job or continue his education and become a better person than his parents were and pass on those lessons to those around him.

Barefield balled out tonight, shame Kuzma went down, think we win with him. But no excuse for giving up all those wide open 3's, this team has definitely taken a step back defensively.
