Official UofU homer thread

While I endorse the Taylor hire, I do need to backtrack a bit. For years now, I've constantly wondered why Whitt seems so damn intent on being a spread offense football team. The players he recruits on offense don't usually fit those strengths, and the way this team is built defensively sure doesn't fit the Spread concept. Why has it been so hard for Whitt to ditch the spread and embrace an offense along the lines of a Stanford, USC, or Alabama? It just seems to me that Utah is better suited to hire a guy with a Pro-Style background and utilize the big, powerful O-lineman Utah tends to recruit as well as the power Running Backs we seem to have no problem getting. I would also tend to believe that running a Pro Style offense makes it a bit easier to land a 4 star, 6'4" QB recruit with NFL aspirations. I will forever be boggled by Whitt's defense first type of mentality while still being intent on running the spread.

This hire pretty much ensures that we are "all in" on the spread for the rest of Whitt's tenure. I truly hope he has the stones to stay all in. Taylor said yesterday in interviews that Whitt told him to come in here and run his offense. I do believe that that is 100% what Whitt wants......right now. The true test is going to come when we play a decent defensive team (maybe BYU) early on in this process and lose a game in which Utah's offense has 10+ 3 and outs. It's just the nature of this beast. We're going to see passing yards like we've never seen before, points are going to be put up at an astonishing rate compared to what Ute fans are used to. There's also going to 3 and outs in which Utah held the ball for a grand total of 15 seconds. I sure hope Whitt can power through that and stay the course, because if not, this will be the death nail of the Whittingham era in Utah.

Going to egriz to get an opinion on a Montana State player would be like going to a BYU board to get an opinion on a Utah player.

Strong has good size, decent speed, and some potential. Started as a true freshman, with a new coaching staff his sophomore year he got benched. Said that he never felt at place at MSU. Could eventually be a decent player, but idk.

Sounds like an absolutely great hire.

1) Do you guys have a legit qb to be taught by this guy who can take the reins next year and lead a nigh-powered passing attack?
Yes. We have 2, actually.

2) How good will your d be next year?
Our D is always good. Our D-Line will be better than last year. Our LB's will be better than last year. Our Safeties will be just as good. Our CB's are our only concern right now, but we're stacked as far as talent is concerned.

I have a very hard time saying our safeties will be just as good. We are losing an all American candidate at one safety spot and struggled mightily when he got hurt this year. Our entire secondary is going to be a work in progress next year, minus Chase Hansen who is solid and returning.

I also have a hard time believing our D-line will be better. We are losing Dimick, and I believe one other starter off of that line. We don't know how Fitz will come back either. However in this case I give Kyle a lot of credit, on the D-line they just continue to replace great players with more great players. So they may be better, or worse, or about the same, hard to know replacing guys like that.

On offense they are losing 3-4 starting O-linemen and their best RB and WR from this year. Taylor should be given a lot of leeway this year because he is almost starting from scratch on the line, though a few of our RB's looked really good before their injuries. Shyne looked like a stud.

Is Tim Patrick the receiver being lost?

Yea he's gone. Was a senior this year.
Damn. I really liked him. I feel like he could be an NFL quality receiver if he were on a more dynamic/explosive offense.

Seemed line he wasn't there very long. Did he not play much as a fresh, soph, jr?

He was always injured. I remember him from 2 seasons ago, then he missed almost all of last year injured. He must not have played much his 1st couple of years.

Very disappointing if true (and I'm probably late to the party on this one), but I heard the reason Domo didn't play in Utah's bowl game was that he didn't want to practice outside in the cold during bowl prep. I guess they rotated the DB's outside for 5, five minute periods of individual work due to lack of room in the indoor practice facility. Also heard that Corey Butler Byrd did not want to practice with a sore knee and the coaching staff felt he was healthy enough to participate. Whitt told him he if he didn't practice, he couldn't play in the game. I guess Byrd's response was something along the lines of "I'll see you on Pro Day".

It pisses me off quite a bit that 2 players that got into some pretty big trouble at Utah, and were subsequently given 2nd chances by the program, didn't want to see it through in the end. IMO, the Domo one is a bit more maddening than CBB. I suppose you could defend Byrd with the idea that the guy is trying to protect his opportunity to play at the next level. That being said, it sounds like he was healthy enough to go. Either way, it really puts a bad taste in my mouth. Both this guys were 4 star recruits. In both cases, I would have rather seen Utah go after some 3 star athletes that actually have the passion to play for the program. I think it serves as a good reminder why not to get too caught up in the recruiting rankings. Utah and even BYU have done quite well recruiting the lower ranked guys that actually appreciate the chances and opportunities afforded to them.

Our DL will be fine next year. We return Lotulelei, Fitts, Anae, Mokofisi. Plus we have a ton of depth behind them, plus all those we add, especially when we add Tufele, a soon to be five star DT.

We will be just as good next year as we were this year. BUT, if we want to have the same record as this year, we will have to be a lot better. Our schedule is BRUTAL next year. Absolutely HARD. BYU fans like to say they have a tough schedule...you could put their last three schedules together and it wouldn't be as tough as next year's.

Oregon, USC, Washington all on the road. Stanford, UCLA, WSU at home. That could easily be six losses.

I'm just glad our OOC is so easy. We may be a 6-6 team next year. OR, if we can get any sort of offense going, we might be a 10 win team next year. It's crazy.

Utah with another four star kid committing to their team. That is 4-6 four star kids, depending on your recruiting service preference. And they have a great shot at 5 more four star kids.

Their class is ranked #19 right now when you look at average star ratings (their overall class is ranked lower, because they will only sign about half the kids of most schools). This class will be small, but it is shaping up to be amazing.

utah really wants tufele

What a game tonight. We are a good team. Krystkowiak is a good coach. We might make some noise in the PAC-12 tourney. Might be a great time to knock off to Vegas for the weekend.

I really don't know why I'm posting this, because I'm sure that I'll jinx it, but last a night a person associated with the Utah program that I trust deeply and has NEVER given me bad info assured me that Tufele is a Ute.

I told him that I refuse to believe it because until the letter of intent is signed, changes of heart are always possible. His answer to me: "You'll see come signing day". I hope this holds true. Off the top of my head, I can't ever remember Utah signing a 5-Star directly out of HS.

It probably all comes down to this weekend. He goes to USC then Utah the following week. Unless he has some huge change of heart this weekend, he's a Ute.

BUT, USC is USC and a lot of people have huge changes of hearts there.

Also, Stevie Tui'kolovatu is a bitch. Utah should have just left him on the side of the road like every other team out there.

Utah up to #35 on kenpom. Which in the pac-12 only puts them behind Arizona(#12), UCLA(#15), and Oregon(#21). Coach K has done a great job this year to say the least.

Devon Daniels...wow. What a treat to watch.

He looks like he'll be a great one, if he can continue to shoot the ball this well and you know he's already athletically gifted so he can attack the hoop, watch out!

And the ability to bring a guy like Sedrick Barefield off the bench...coach K has assembled a very exciting young team.
