What's new

Official Utah Utes Football 2012 Thread

First time I've been able to look at this thread since the loss. Had a busy weekend moving. A few thoughts:

-Hats off to Gary Anderson and his team. They were the tougher team, they wanted it more, and the deserved every bit of that win.

-Can we finally close the book on the Jordan Wynn era? It seems so. I never root for a player to get hurt, but it's pretty obvious at this point that Wynn's career could be/should be over. Time for Utah to decide how they want to handle the Hays/Wilson situation.

-No suprise about the BYU fans piling on. It's the usual suspects and is to be expected. I don't really have a problem with it, I just find it funny that it's gotten to the point where they are more interested in a Utah loss than a BYU win.

-BYU fans must feel pretty confident heading into this game. However, I still see them as seriously untested. The Washington St team they beat just eeked out a 4 point win over Eastern Washington this weekend in a game in which Wazuu gave up 469 yards of total offense to a Big Sky team (380 of it through the air). And what can we take from the Weber State win? Not much.

So Coug fans, enjoy patting your team on the back, go ahead an run your traps, mock Utah for the USU loss, and talk about how you're going to demolish the Utes this week. In the meantime, Utah will spend the week angry, frustrated, embarrassed, and ready to get back on the field ASAP. Oh yeah, and Jordan Wynn won't be there.

See you Saturday.

The game plan changes with Wynn out. Anderson did just what I would have done against Wynn and that was bring everyone up in the box to stop White and dare Wynn to beat you through the air. Now with Hays or Wilson, that can't be done. The defense has to play the Utes honest. The Aggies had a couple of nice drives but the blocked punt was definitely the big play for them. This will be an interesting game and I like the Utes' chances now that the playbook can be more than "White up the middle" and "five yard slant pass".

My random thoughts...

The refs sucked. Did anyone even see the "punch" thrown? I wasn't at the game, but on tv they never showed it. The announcers thought the penalty was going to be a hold, and were surprised that it was a punch. Then they never showed it for some reason. I am left to believe that it wasn't something worthy of tossing him. I'm thinking he was being held so he smacked the blocker's arm away. I could be wrong though, because they never showed it. And that pass interference call at the end was total BS. I've watched the replay like 100 times and still can't see where there was a penalty. He was so open because he was a tight end and nobody was guarding him, not because he cheated.

Having said all that, can the Utes get a freaking kicker? As bad as the Utes played, and as bad as the refs were, the Utes win this game in regulation if the kicker doesn't totally blow. Why do we even attempt field goals at the end of games? He was clutch in the WSU game last year, but that is the only time I remember him being clutch. How are we wasting a scholarship on this guy? Surely there are plenty of kickers who can be somewhat reliable and would love a free education.

In addition to the kicker, our special teams in general has been pretty bad. Blocked punt for a touchdown? Blocked fg for touchdown against USC last year? We need to get this fixed.

On the play calling, I thought it was okay at times, but horrible at others. For example, when Travis Wilson comes in, the Utes are basically giving away a down. There is very little mystery as to what the Utes are going to do when he comes in. The one time they mixed it up while he was in, he threw a touchdown pass. They need to let him throw the ball. He should be more than just a running back in a wildcat formation. He's a QB, and we're hurting at QB, how the heck are we not playing him at QB?

Wynn was horrible. How the heck was he the starter? I can't think of a single pass that he threw which hit a receiver in stride. Every time he threw the ball, the receiver would have to slow WAY down, or even stop in order to even have a chance at catching it. And that is if he even got it in the general area of the receiver. Wow, the guy just sucks. Hays sucks too, but the Utes are 100 times better with Hays than Wynn. Now they need to practice and play with Hays/Wilson so the receivers can get used to a QB who can actually throw the ball.

Can we just allow Blechen to play? He's learned his lesson, lol.

What the heck is up with the o line? Just brutal.

This loss sucked, no doubt. But all the people thinking it means BYU is going to win are in for a rude awakening. Utah had just about everything go wrong, and still had a chance to win in regulation, and should have tied in OT. And this was against a team that I fully expect to beat BYU in a few weeks.

If we were to lose to byu, this season could get really scary. Like, not make a bowl game scary.

Drunk again?

I would by far rather play against Wynn than Hays or Wilson. The Wynn injury is clearly a blessing.

Folks, the officials were PAC-12 refs. Just sayin...

Were they really Pac 12 refs? I don't think that is accurate. Pretty sure I saw WAC a few times.

I distinctly remember at least one graphic that said it was a PAC12 crew.

Not that it should make any difference.

I'm excited for the game. I was really worried about the USU game, but like many others, if there was a game to pick to lose it'd be the USU game. Love that it helps get USU going and that it could serve as that proverbial "wake up call" for the Utes.

I'm actually taking my BYU-loving brother-in-law to the game. Should be a lot of fun. We may even tailgate a bit before the game.

I don't know why Ute fans are looking for a cliff to jump off of. On the road against a decent team with a chance to win late. No shame there. Relax.

I think, once the dust settled, most of us have calmed down. I agree with your brief analysis, and believe that USU is (was) probably as underrated as they have ever been. Gordon damn, I'd love to have Keeton on my team...

It would be nice to capitalize on the strength of our defense this year, but our offense would need to mature rapidly to make significant noise. I am encouraged by the little nuggets we've seen of Travis Wilson, but he is nowhere close to ready to take this team on his shoulders. I expect good things of him in the years upcoming.

There is still hope that the team will galvanize, and make a respectable show in conference.

Losing Wynn helps the Utes, but there is still the big issue of the O-line. The tackle play was really scary and going against Van Noy won't ease my worries.

Keep in mind USU center Larsen is a legit player and probably a future pro. Lotu will have it much easier against BYU.
