I mentioned this before, but I'll do it again. I think a logical move would be to trade Al to Detroit for Ben Gordon. Considering Al is a bigger need for them (they really need a big) and he expires a year earlier than Gordon, I think we could get a pick from them. It would be great if we could get their #9 this year, but I'd be willing to take a future top 3 protected in this deal.

We need shooting, and they need a big. I used to love Gordon when he came out of college, but I think he's suffered from whatever Harris came down with in NJ (I think it's called "who gives a sh#$ because we suck itus"). We know what we have with Al, and it's not going to get better, I'd be willing to take a gamble on Gordon, and he only has 2 yrs left on his deal.

The hardest thing to imagine in the Al trade scenarios is how to get value for him without hurting us in '13.

I keep coming back to a one-year swap with Houston -- Al for KMart.

Or, there are a few teams that can take him without having to give back lots of salary in return (Milwaukee, Indy, Houston, Cleveland, etc.).

Here's what I'd like to see happen:

-Let Josh Howard walk, and replace him for the same price with (gulp) AK. Dude misses Utah, he will no longer be a financial albatross around Utah's neck, he'd come in knowing that his roll is the 8th or 9th guy on the roster and he may be able to stay healthy playing less minutes which might make him rather effective. IMO it's also a pretty good defensive upgrade for Utah. I think it's a low risk with the potential of an extremely high reward.

-Let CJ walk. Addition by subtraction.

-Get rid of Bell. Trade, amnesty, whatever. Again, addition by subtraction.

-Dangle Jefferson and Sap as trade bait and see which one garners more interest. If the right deal comes along for one of them, make the move but if not, bring them both back. I realize the frontcourt is pretty crowded but Utah is still better off with both of them as opposed to trading one if we're not getting back the right pieces.

-Trade Devin Harris.

-If we end up with both Sap and Jefferson on the squad next year, Ty ABSOLUTELY has to bite the bullet and tell one of them that they are permanently coming off the bench. There is no way in hell Favors should ever come off the bench again.

-Find a way to get a late lottery pick to secure the PG of the future and sign Steve Nash. I honestly believe this guy has 2 or 3 really good years left in the tank and he would instantly make Utah a 50+ win team and a top 4 seed. It seems Utah has enough talent to at least garner some interest from Nash.

The pick definitely swings it in our favor, but from everything I've heard about Detroit is that they desperately need a big. They're kind of the opposite of us, they have good young guards that need time (Knight, Stuckey), but have a veteran who they owe big bucks that they feel pressure to play.

The reason I think we could swindle them out of a pick is that they seem more desperate for a big, than we are a guard, and Al expires 1 year earlier.

Kills us is kind of strong. Gordon + the 4 youngins would add up to $29MM, so we'd have about $30MM still in cap space (kind of mind boggling that w/out him we'd have only $16.5MM in salaries if we fill out our roster next year with only 1 yr deals). But we could still go after a big time free agent and have plenty left over to get other pieces.

While I aagree with several of your points the AK one is WAY off. What makes you think he'd be ok coming in as the 8th or 9th guy on the roster? We have several examples of veterans not accepting diminishing roles in Bell and Watson. We also know that AK has a fragile psyche, what happens when he only plays 10 minutes and has only a few touches? I do not beleive he would accept this role an I beleive it to be a bigger risk than you indicated.

Couldn't agree more. I'm just not sure we can get him, if you think it's realistic I'll fall in line. He is definitely my favorit pg.

We also know that AK has a fragile psyche, what happens when he only plays 10 minutes and has only a few touches? I do not beleive he would accept this role an I beleive it to be a bigger risk than you indicated.

I'm not officially endorsing AK, but based on talent alone he would play a hell of a lot more than just 10 minutes a game. He'd be #1 on the SF depth chart.

It's probably one of my least popular leanings, but I'm just too curious about what AK might mean to this team... I've thought about it plenty. If he had no history to this team, then he'd be the FA that everybody was talking about. Him and Favors together? AK with no Sloan Leash or Sloan Doghouse? c'mon, you're curious too.
