What if Memo had never gotten hurt?
March 2nd, 2011
What if Memo had never gotten hurt? What ifs do you no good, but in this wildest of seasons I find myself drifting into how did we get here thought. Where did this most unpredictable season come from and why has it happened? No simple answer is available.
What if Memo hadn’t experience the most debilitating basketball injury imaginable that fateful night in Denver? Maybe we would be in the exact same situation. On the other hand, Memo’s injury may have been the first domino or at least a major one.
Let’s assume the Jazz would have still lost Boozer and been able to parlay that into Jefferson. Would the Jazz rebounding issues have been solved with Memo’s presence? Would Millsap have come off the bench as a game impacting force rather than a often overmatched power forward? Would Memo outside shooting freed Raja Bell on the outside?
Financially, The Jazz wouldn’t have needed to sign Francisco Elson freeing a million dollars to spend elsewhere. With Memo the Jazz wouldn’t have need to use Andrei as much as a power forward either freeing him for more minutes at the small forward. This both may have given the Jazz more flexibility to make a trade, but more importantly may have help AK stay healthy.
Memo’s addition to the offense could have changed how the Jazz play and how the Jazz are defended. The Jazz are playing at a tremendous three point deficit each night. The losses of Korver and Matthews are most often cited, but the Jazz leader in three pointers each of the last few years has been Memo Okur.
Memo’s outside presence may have opened the floor to allow Jefferson a smoother transition, it may have freed CJ Miles from the burden of being the sole scorer on the second unit.
Of course the two big questions are if Memo hadn’t gotten hurt would Sloan still be the coach and Deron still the point guard?
There are no answers to these questions. Honestly, they are irrelevant. It is a good reminder in how fragile most NBA franchises are and how dramatically plans can be changed in the course of a season, most often by the unexpected.
