Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor said Monday that center Mehmet Okur has been sent by the team to Santa Barbara, Calif., to rehabilitate his left Achilles tendon.

With the Jazz playing five preseason road games in nine days, the team believes that Okur can make better progress by primarily focusing on his rehab, rather than traveling with Utah and sitting on the bench during games.

“He can get it at a consistent time and he’s the focus of it,” said O’Connor prior to the Jazz’s game in Portland. “We have 16 other players that we’re dealing with, and it’s difficult for us.”

Okur has been working in a high-tech human performance lab, with the Jazz monitoring his progress.

The team still plans to evaluate Okur in mid-October. But the initial results from his Santa Barbara stay are promising, and he could join the team in Los Angeles next week for a three-game road trip.

Sounds like he's coming along better than expected.

I really hope he over-rehabs and gets his achilles and legs in general stronger than ever, rather than come back too early and re-injure himself. Even if it means an extra month+ of rehab, I could care less.

Get into kick butt shape Memo. AK's and Fes' transformation of their bodies should be motivation enough.

Hell yeah. Lets bring it Memo!!

You guys do remember that Okur is terrible, right?

I do. I'm not counting on him having any impact this year at all. Even without injury he'd be one step slower then he already was, and that's pretty damn slow.

why does everyone hate memo? he is our money man!! The guy may not be a great shot blocking defender but he is not as bad a defense as you guys might think. We are a much better team with him than without him. Go Jazz and you guys best start cheering for OKUR

Okur is as good if not better than Millsap and also has height. He also would open the floor for AJ instead of crowding the paint like Millsap.

If he is the same Okur from before. If he is a step slower or has a hard time getting back into a rhythm that is a different story though.

If he comes back and can make a contribution great; but I expect absolutely nothing from Memo

Slow white guys on the wrong side of 30 usually don't come back strong from any type of injury related to their mobility.
