I watched Boyhood. I feel like it's more of an event than a real film. I understand the temptation to vote for it but feel like it's a mistake because these lists get looked at 10 years down the line and I'm not certain anyone will have watched Boyhood a second time during that span.

I can't imagine this ever being considered remotely rewatchable in the way that our true classics are.

You're probably right about it being more of an event. But to me that's what make it so unique. Linklater is really pushing the envelop here with Boyhood. Boyhood to me of all the movies nominated this year has the most heart and is by far the most honest. It didn't feel like anything was forced. The actors felt like real people to me and I really connected with all the characters. The message I took from it was that every moment is to be cherished and treasured. I came away looking the world from a different perspective and I guess that's all you can ask from a film.


In an interview Ethan Hawke said of Linklater: "He doesn't feel the need to hyperbolise life, to make life more interesting than it is. He thinks that it's pretty magical just the way it is. Most directors spend a lot of energy trying to show you how great they are or how fabulous their vision of the world is, and Rick doesn't do that". To me this description fits Boyhood really well.


No it's not formatted the same way films rolled out of that Miramax/Weinstein "factory", but who said movies have to fit that mould? To me a film's greatness is what it does to you as a person, what you take away from it and how it impacts your life, not how many hair raising moments it gives you.


To answer your question, yes I will watch it again, may be once a year, not only to be entertained by it, but also to serve as a reminder to me of how magical ordinary life can be and that every second counts and to not take life for granted.

Oscars update:


- Whiplash deservingly won best supporting and editing. (called it).


- Grand Budapest predictably won most of the design awards so far.....


- Good to see Patricia Arquette winning best supporting for Boyhood, well deserved.

Lazy - do you agree? I think it is well deserved, very unique, very iconic... Interstella had a good score too.
 
I have not seen boyhood and I ****ing hate it already. (Never even seen a preview either)

I believe No Country for Old Men is a better movie. I know which one I'd prefer to watch again.

One thing that ran through those brutally honest takes was a true disdain for Inherent Vice. I'm wondering if PTA has finally run out of goodwill in LA.

Some of the comments are mind-blowingly baffling. "I didn't get Birdman..." "I voted twice for Unbroken..." "American Sniper is right-wing ideological..." Seriously, these people get to vote? Are they brainless?
 
By the way, I think you can tell a lot about a potential actor in how they conduct themselves speaking. Miles Teller, on stage last night with maybe the hottest young actress working (as in looks, not talent) had a highly attractive (I'm a confident male and can say this) confidence about him that quietly radiated. He stood there like a man, reading his lines, very confident like a man, not showy, not corny, not nervous, not trying to be cool because he was next to the hot girl, not trying to impress her. He stood there reading his lines, looking at the camera, almost as if she wasn't there, not in some rude way either. Almost like he knew he's hot **** and wasn't impressed by her simply because she's hot. Not sure my point is coming across right but in short, I was really, really impressed by his stage presence. Dude is ****ing legit and I can't wait to see Whiplash.
