#OscarsSoWhite - Thoughts?

Why don't Asians, Mexicans, polynesians, etc bitch about racism more often?

Serious question

I suspect they bitch about it more than you realize.

Well, none of the other groups were systematically enslaved for a couple hundred of years in this country, none were subject to Jim Crow like laws after enslavement for decades, none (as far as I know)were subjects of hate and bigotry from an entire region of the US, none were victims (at least to the same extent) of redlining practices where it came to home lending, etc. While there exists bigotry toward Hispanics in the US, it's legacy isn't nearly as pervasive or malignant as for Blacks. I'm not aware of the same extent of systemic, widespread and institutional obstacles existing to hinder the integration of Asian, Polynesians or Hispanics into US society.

Does this help?

People keep saying the main problem is that there aren't enough good roles being cast to non-white races--and while that may be true--it's not the most crucial issue. It's not just that there needs to be more diversity in Hollywood; they need to expand the Academy Awards to more than just Hollywood (allow foreign films to be nominated). Cause, ya know, other countries (believe it or not) do exist, and they, too, make films.

There is already a category called 'Best Foreign Film'....

Didn't that Italian guy win an Oscar for Best Actor even though he's Italian for 'Life is Beautiful'?

But I get what you're saying though... all too often it's the Hollywood actors who win it.

Yes
Thanks for the response

Rosa was doing the opposite of making everything about race. She was saying, "My skin color will have nothing to do with where I choose to sit on the bus." Making things about skin color is racist.

We're talking about the academy awards, right? A bunch of millionaire attention whores patting themselves on the back. You'll have to excuse me if I'm having a difficult time giving a ****.

I think I'll save my indignation for a circumstance that demonstrates some sort of impact on regular, everyday people and the real struggles they face.

In fact, I would contend that this sort of argument does more to trivialize racial issues than to actually advance the dialogue.

But that's probably just my white privilege talking...

Ice Cube chimed in and mocked the Oscar boycott.

Said it was like being mad that your cake doesn't have even more frosting.

yeah, I know this doesn't play with the tools who take their cues from the mega players in cultural management and societal morality, the modernists with what I call their neo-religionist visions of change and progress, but you are just right.

Oscar-type awards, and even awards like the Nobel Prize, do not reflect black cultural values. They are demanding blacks paint themselves white to play the game, in the first place.

Carrying the thought a bit further, why do blacks even play basketball, it's a white man's game. As a white man's game, it's a game of brains and skill. .. . dribbling and shooting. Blacks playing it, it becomes bump and grind, and jumping.

From a Breeders' Cup point of view, the reason we bred blacks to be big and tall had more to do with toting those bales than dribbling and shooting, ya know.

and before the morons among you really get going on their choking rage at the existence of someone who doesn't just capitulate to their short-circuit logic and give up the language to their rhetorical imperatives, if you don't see some humor somewhere in the lines above, I suggest you get psychiatric help.

Wait, what? Should different races only use enjoy things created by their own race?

Is this serious thought that you agree with or just abstract thinking?

I didn't think so.
Are you thinking of ice T? He looks half white

understandable question. We have a black mod with a bronc name, and a white moderator with a bronc name. I would get confused if I even cared. Broncster70 is I think sorta Irish. Truly, speaking from a white privileged sort of common sense. But I'd bet the black mod doesn't care about the Oscars at all, either. Even more common sense speaking there, usually. Common sense of the street.

So read and quote the whole post and you have the answer. White folks likely invent games that reflect somewhat their values or physical abilities. If we went looking for them, we'd find some games invented by black folks historically that would do the same. Why doesn't our media give them more play time? Because the media is historically, financially, and educationally, WHITE. Blacks are good sports to play white man's games, and sometimes dang good at them, too.

You completely lost me here, babe.
