Pau Gasol?

Lindsey said "lean and strategic" for next year. This or something like it could happen if I read into it.

Probably means no real FA agent signings, unless they decide to bring back Al. I have a feeling Lindsey and KOC are expecting players to be dumped at the deadline as teams try to avoid the 150-200% luxury tax penalties. If the Jazz have $30M in cap room available, they can pick up quality players AND picks as the price for saving teams 2x on the dollar.

There are a lot of teams that would be willing to give up talent for Gasol. If we were to get him, one of the 4 would have to go. Lakers' best option is to amnesty Kobe and let him rest for a year, then bring him back. If Dwight chooses not to stay, then they don't have to get rid of anyone else.
But there are not a lot of teams that can just take on his 25M salary without giving a lot of salary back. The Jazz can.

Do we even have any players that are under contract next year where we could salary match in a Gasol trade?
We don't need to. We are under the cap. We can trade them a future 2nd round pick for him.
.
As it stands I would only take him off of their hands if they are giving up something else. Gasol will cost them upwards of 70M next year if they re-sign Howard. No way you bail them out lightly. Not many teams are in a position to take him for nothing and have a desire to.

There weren't any takers at the deadline. Lakers will have a very limited number of trade partners available as they HAVE to dump salary. There were no takers at the deadline and I'm sure they were asking for little in the end: perhaps expiring contracts and picks. I'd give them Murphy and a lottery-protected 1st.
I wouldn't give up a 1st for him. They have to trade him if they sign Howard. The Lakers are not is a position of strength in any trade with Gasol. If they want anything close to a first tell them to find somebody else to take him.
.
I'm not so sure the Jazz should not be expecting a 1st from the Lakers just to save them all of that money.

The lakers don't want anyone to salary match and send back salary. They are trading him to save money. Taking back salary doesn't do that for them.

You got it. With Gasol's salary, there's no way the Jazz should pay the Lakers to get him, the Lakers should be paying the Jazz. And I'm not even sure that a single 1st rounder from the Lakers would be enough.
