Sorry if this is already being discussed elsewhere.

Locke has posted a breakdown of the 82games.com PER-allowed stats here:

Millsap rates as the 8th worst defender of any qualified player in the entire NBA. "Similer to... Bargnani, Frye". Jefferson rates somewhat better. Favors doesn't qualify because of the minutes he played, but would have rated among the very best in the league.

I think this says it all about Millsap's future as a starter with the Jazz. Feel free to disagree.

Well, he's improved something every off-season. Is it possible for him work on defense over the summer. I guess I haven't heard a lot about players working on their defensive games and coming back vastly improved, but maybe I haven't been listening.
 
Just kidding. He doesn't say that.

You should probably read the first two paragraphs again and take into account that help defense is hardly even mentioned in the article. He mentioned one metric, which while it shows something of value, does not tell the whole story. Millsap is the 8th worst defender in the entire NBA? Come on.

He is not getting any taller unfortunately, but I wish he would show the intensity of 2-3 years ago though.

If Millsap's guy is torching him PER-wise, apparently he is neither stopping his own guy nor getting the help he needs to stop him.

Jefferson rates poorly too. So, who is going to be doing all the helping that Millsap needs? Favors, I guess. Or, Millsap could just come off the bench, matched up against scrubs that would likely be easier for him to defend.
 
I can find a stat to prove that my opinions are all facts too.

Millsap is actually quite good defensively, but defense is a team effort, and the stats don't account for that fact.

Nice post and disregard the ##### above.

Several important points can be taken from those stats.

1. Sap is really bad and Jefferson is not too far behind. Likely about the worst starting defensive tandem in the league. I wonder if this comes as a surprise to either Sloan or Ty. One thing this is confirms for me is that the Jazz have been all about running the Sloan offensive system, defense be damned. I hope that Ty can figure this out.

2. CJ is middle of the road, not a terrible defender as many would say.

3. Fes has stats like the just-named Defensive Player of the Year. Yet he gets no regular PT due point 1 above.

4. Harris and Watson are surprisingly bad. One of them needs to go.

Well, that's what the stats say. How would you argue otherwise? Also team defense starts with individual defense. If one guy slacks, the other team will go that way and then the entire defense has to adjust to cover for the weak defender. Did the Jazz give up any open 3s this year because the wings were collapsing to cover for the weak interior D? Just wondering.

They have promised to bring some stats that show us how awesome Millsap is on defense. Honestly, I would be happy to see anything like that, because I like Millsap. However, I have a hunch they won't be back with any stats.

I think his defense has slipped year by year. Are you watching the games? He gets torched on a regular basis.
 
FWIW, Okur put up a 16.6 PER-allowed during the 09-10 season. That is not particularly good either, but it is a bit better than Jefferson this year and more than a bit better than Millsap.
