What's new

Pelicans @ Jazz - 7PM MTN

I don't think this whole conversation should be that hard.

#1 - we know that Favors, Rubio and Gobert don't really work together
#2 - Favors is probably the odd man out due to his contract and awkward fit with Gobert

If Favors, Gobert and Rubio together don't make us win and Favors is expendable, you trade him for an asset. If Gobert was healthy, Favors becomes unnecessary now that Joe Johnson is healthy. That is my personal opinion. Maybe we lose a game a month more because we don't have Favors.

To me, that's still trying to win but being smart about the future. We should be trading Favors as soon as Gobert gets back.

So would you guys trade Favors for future considerations that you could parlay into a better draft position even though it might knock you out of the playoffs this year? That's the kind of tanking I'm talking about, not telling Donovan to lose games. Just doing whatever you have to do to secure the future, not the present.

Ya. But I think trading favors might make us make the playoffs as well as help the future.

My .02 on tanking..... I was all about the tank in Corbin’s last year. That roster was built to tank. And I kind of had fun rooting for losses that year if I’m being honest.
But I don’t want to tank right now. I want to win.

I have no problem with those who want to tank though as it’s a strategy that can work to make he team better and I don’t think that it “ruins” players.

We didn't tank we re-tooled... re-tooled into a mediocrity treadmill. Then we picked a direction and it looked good, but we got kicked in the groin by Gordon and back to mediocrity re-tool treadmill...

Only this time we do have two players who have a bigger upside than the previous core... and we have/had an opportunity to do a sharp turn down, but we don't have the stomach for it. We will likely be a playoff team next year which is great, but I think unless we hit on a mid first round pick this year that we might end up one marquee player short.

When we traded D-Will we should have gone full tank ahead.

The gm tanked one year. Corbin wasn’t really playing ball and tried to win but you can’t tell me that jazz management weren’t tanking the year we ended up with the 5th pick when you look at the roster that year.

So call it mediocre. They had picks #9, 3, 3, 10, 7, 5 and mixed in a bunch of veterans here and there to get one lousy playoff series win largely because of Joe Johnson. I'm tired of watching them lose so they can sell me on "Hope". I'm old and grumpy, I want to see wins--45 wins aint 60, but it is sure better than 27.

Good post. Those are some pretty high draft picks that resulted in mostly garbage.

No Fing way. I just walked past Z Dog in the concourse.

We acquired 3 of those in trades... who was #7. Wasn't like they were all in consecutive drafts and it wasn't like we tanked all those seasons for those picks. We tanked once... had we got Aaron Gordon we would be in perfect shape, had we retained Hayward we'd be in fantastic shape, had we done both well ****.

Ripple affect may lead us to not get DM, but tough to measure I guess.

I just think you don't make decisions based on what we have done the last 6-7 years... you look at what is best to do right now for the long-term. A one year quick tank may save us 6-7 years of mediocrity. I get the impatience but that is why most tanks fail... teams like Orlando, Sacramento try to short cut the process (they also miss on a lot of picks).

I'm fine with either side of the argument, but both sides are fans... which was my original issue.

The only thing we need/have to do is create assets with guys who don't fit around Mitchell and Gobert long term. Trading Favors isn't tanking. Trading Favors is not letting an asset go to waste. Maybe the same could be said for Joe Johnson should he have any trade value.

Exactly. This is Favors last season with the Jazz, unless he is willing to sign for a ridiculously low contract. So it's trade him or lose him for nothing.

In general, I'm all for tanking. But when you already have two young All-Star caliber players like Gobert and Mitchell (and an elite coach), it's not crazy to move beyond the tanking phase of a rebuild.

Although, I do agree that we most likely will need another All-Star talent to win a title. That's why tanking--and doing it now--is appealing; it's the most likely way to get another elite talent for a small market team.

In an ideal world, Mitchell, Gobert and Snyder are enough to cure what's always been the franchise's achilles heel: attracting great free agents so tanking isn't as necessary. I don't know if this will come to fruition, but it's my growing hope.
