Petteri Koponen -- Or who's your target if Dante's out for the year?

Hopefully this thread proves premature. And even if Dante's indeed out, the Jazz may just decide to go with what they have.

But who would be your (realistic) target if the Jazz want to add a piece? At approximately what price do you think they'd be available?

Here's three names that I haven't heard much on this site that at least moderately intrigue me and may be semi-realistic. Not necessarily my top choices, but ones that may be realistic for the price and are not yet on the downside of their careers. The first two might be Joe Ingles-type leaps of faith:

Petteri Koponen: 27 years old; former first rounder (30th pick); never played in NBA yet, perhaps partly due to bad timing; first-team Eurocup this past season; 6-5 PG/SG; sounds like adequate (certainly not great) athleticism; sounds like a creative, unselfish player; good passer, can run a team; doesn't get to foul line much; 45% 3-pt shooter over past 3 years, excellent foul shooter; rights held by Mavericks; may cost a bit of $ to get buyout arranged even if Mavs trade him (don't know if they are interested), but seems to have NBA interest; would likely provide useful size and shooting for Jazz. A couple of pro-Koponen articles:

Gal Mekel: 27 years old; 6-3 PG; played 2013-4 with Mavs; Mavs apparently liked him, but cut him in order to get Barea last year; had a short stint with New Orleans this past season; Jazz at one time were said to be interested in him; apparently good at pick-and-roll, can run a team; not a great shooter; decent size, but probably below-average athlete; apparently has been wanting to get back in NBA after finishing last season in Europe; would probably come very cheap; only advantage over what we have now is probably his size

Evan Turner: 26 years old; you all know his game, so I'll just say that he could offer play-making depth if none of our other current options take a clear step forward. I don't like his lack of efficiency (his bad shooting especially-- though maybe no worse than our current PGs) and ball-pounding, but there's an argument that he made progress in fitting his (considerable, if inefficient) skills into NBA-team needs a bit better last year with the Celtics. Would offer very interesting flexibility if either Burks or Millsap could guard PGs for stretches. He probably offers almost average productivity on a decent and expiring contract. Celts have too many mediocre players signed and he may be the odd-man out. Could a low-first round pick get him? -- Celts super-writer Kevin O'Connor on the possibility:

They already have 3 PGs signed. Not sure they will sign another. I think they would just start, whomever has the best camp. That said, I wouldn't mind giving Evan Turner a shot to make the roster. He had some really solid games last season and would definitely fit as a back-up 3. He has similar playmaking ability as Hayward but not the jumpshot.

Darren Collison is who I like and I think we could get if we really wanted to.

But I think Trey and Neto will be splitting time at the PG spot to start the year.
Cotton will play spot minutes for foul trouble and bad play.

turner would be interesting considering the jazz run the offense through the wings

This. ^^^
While I wouldn't pay much to get him, I could see this being a mutually beneficial trade for both teams. Jazz get a guy who can start this year, while the Celtics pick up a pick or two for a guy they're likely to dump.

We don't need to develop any new pgs we don't have. Either role with the ones we got or get George Hill.

How do you propose we get Hill? Why would Indy be willing to part with him given their current depth chart?

Trey Burke will be our starting PG. We are stuck with that until at least a month or so before the deadline, when someone might become available.

If the Jazz can stay in the playoff hunt with Burke as the starter, they'll make a trade for a veteran at the deadline and try to make a big push heading into the postseason. No idea who they'll go after, but someone will be available and they have assets to burn.

Jesus Turner is ****ing awful.

Off that list, I'd go with the first dude by a mile.

But I'd rather have George Hill or Dennis Schröder over him.

That's how I see it. Jazz have cap space, picks, and depending on who the PG is, they could give up Burke, Neto or Cotton in a trade. This is a good opportunity for Trey to up his trade value.

Which is scary because Hayward's jumpshot is adequate but not stellar by any stretch.

Hate to disagree... not. But think this is exactly wrong. IF we're in the playoff hunt w/ Burke, we won't trade for a veteran, we would hold the course. But it would also prove that this team is GOOD (especially in the W. Conf) despite the PG. As pointed out by many, with Hayward, Burks, Hood - good ball handlers who can run the plays, and w/ Rudy setting the D... great core. They won't make a push to jump one round in the playoffs.

Yes, they may trade, but it won't be for a veteran or for 2015/2016 playoffs.

Depends on who becomes available. Utah should be in the playoff hunt regardless, but standing pat with Trey Burke will be a mistake unless he improves dramatically this year. I agree with Ellis that if the opportunity comes along for a significant upgrade at PG, Utah should and probably will pursue it.
