Phil Jackson's assessment of today's NBA.....

....almost identical to mine! "New York Knicks president Phil Jackson isn't a fan of the way the game is being played these days...the current "individualized" style of the NBA isn't disciplined and -- even more so -- just isn't pleasing to the eye. (Unwatchable?)

"When I watch some of these playoff games, and I look at what's being run out there, as what people call an offense, it's really quite remarkable to see how far our game has fallen from a team game," "Four guys stand around watching one guy dribble a basketball."

"I watch LeBron James, for example. He might [travel] every other time he catches the basketball (they certainly "palm the ball" or "carry" it) if he's off the ball. He catches the ball, moves both his feet. You see it happen all the time. There's no structure, there's no discipline, there's no 'How do we play this game' type of attitude. And it goes all the way through the game. To the point where now guys don't screen -- they push guys off with their hands."

He said the problem is widespread as teams shun structured offenses in favor of constant pick-and-roll plays.

"The game actually has some beauty to it, and we've kind of taken some of that out of it to make it individualized," Jackson told Bleacher Report. "It's a lot of who we are as a country, individualized stuff."

I read the article. A lot of b.s. Teams today are focusing on team play as much as ever. The ideal is the Spurs and Warriors -- you can't get any better team play than that. You have to go back to the early 70s Knicks to see such ball movement. Yes, there is the stand around and watch offense still, but Jackson of all people should talk -- he coached Jordan and Kobe, both who dominated the ball while other guys stood around and watched. I think Phil is just bored and frustrated because he can't seem to do anything right with the Knicks. He's never had to deal with failure, or maybe we should say work with a poor hand of cards.

I'd have to agree. Some of those staggered screens the Warriors set for Mr. Curry were beautiful to see and that's not even talking about their defense and help defense. Mr. Jackson sounds like someone who just bought a case of sour grapes, especially when his team was one of the laughing stocks of the NBA.

There were 4 watchable teams last year in the NBA, the Warriors, the Spurs, the Clippers and the Hawks, for the most part! Cleveland was still unwatchable as well as they played! Today's NBA is closer to the AND1 league in "style" as it is to the NBA of the 70's, 80's and 90's!

It's unwatchable, yet watching figures are through the roof.

Typical nostalgia nonsense you often hear from old people.

Frankly, many, if not most people are attracted to NBA games today.....for anything BUT the game itself! The NBA has to put on elaborate half time shows, play ear shattering music both during the game and during timeouts, (which is even beginning to annoy players!) have "lazer light" pregame shows and a host of other non-basketball related entertainment...to put people in the arena!

I'm talking about the tens of millions of TV watchers. None of that is shown on TV, and none of it factored into the mutli-billion dollar TV deal that was recently signed.

1) The average ticket price of an NBA game is $53. Are you seriously suggesting people are forking out $100+ per game-- assuming they don't go alone-- primarily to watch a flamboyant man throw frisbees for his border collie for 10 minutes...?

2) Exactly how old ARE you, man? Because "out of touch" doesn't even begin to describe most of what you post.

....I'm suggesting that today's NBA product is so pathetically flawed...that I'm at a loss for words as to what the draw ACTUALLY is, either in person or on television! It's unfathomable to me that the league is actually making ton's of money with the overall skilled (should I say "unskilled") players that they employ! The NBA is just one step above the quality of basketball displayed in the "AND1" league....with the rules violations they are permitted to get away with! Yes, I am seriously "old school" (not back to the Bob Cousy days old!) and am just appalled at the bastardizing of the game being played in today's NBA! I will concede that the 3 point shooting on display by some players and teams is amazing at times, but even there, for every good game and player shooting 3's, you have 5 that are stomach turning!

CJ, did you ever see anyone with such a combination of ball handling and shooting skills as Steph Curry -- and don't say Pistol Pete, because he was not a good shooter but a volume shooter like Trey, only worse. Of course he was a great passer too unlike Trey. I actually don't remember much about Maravich's play in the NBA until the later years. To be honest I wasn't a big fan of him like you. His gunning in college really turned me off to him as a player.

...who ever said I was a big fan of Pete Maravich? Flamboyant, yes! Fundamentally sound? Not hardly! Turrible defense, too! Curry, over all, has turned out to be a much better shooter and distributor of the ball than Maravich! But even Curry could improve his shot selection, true or false?

Yet you can't seem to turn away from this hideous product. Very strange. Were you aware that you are free to quit watching and commenting if you do not like the NBA?

He can comment i he want!!!! You can't say!
Didn't say that he can't comment, but I do find it strange that he wouldn't simply move on to something he likes. You don't find it ironic that this guy devours the NBA product while simultaneously being flabbergasted that anybody else would watch it at all?

He is just mad all the time I think.
