Philly Arena

I'm sure this will be a fun one to watch.

Mayor Cherelle Parker said Wednesday the Philadelphia 76ers will spend millions to support the city and its school district, as well as initiatives designed to benefit residents and small businesses — if its controversial proposal to build an arena in Center City is approved.

The announcement came during a hastily called news conference that saw Parker share details of a wide-ranging agreement that would keep the Sixers in Philadelphia until at least 2061. The mayor, who announced her support for the arena last week, also outlined the elements of a community benefits agreement, and the legislative process she hopes will hand the Sixers the approvals they need to build a new arena at 10th and Market streets.

And Parker reiterated her full-throated support Wednesday for the team’s $1.55 billion development proposal.

“Anyone who has any challenges with what is contained in this agreement, you no longer have the Philadelphia 76ers as the villain here. I am Cherelle L. Parker. I am the 100th mayor of the city of Philadelphia. I am proud and take full responsibility for what is included in this agreement,” Parker said inside the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Why wouldn't the city just spend the money on the school districts, the city, benefits for residents and small businesses?

I don't get in the age of billion dollar franchises why these teams can't or wont fund their own arenas?

When they can get the city to do it for them, why should they? I mean, the purpose of capitalism in America is to enrich the billionaires, and we can't bloody well do that if they have to continually spend their money to buy their own ****. Get real.

Interesting move by Mayor Parker! It seems like the agreement is a win-win, with the Sixers staying in Philly and a commitment to supporting local initiatives. While the idea of a new arena in Center City sounds exciting, it will be interesting to see how the community benefits plan plays out. https://whyy.org/articles/mayor-parker-sixers-arena-community-benefits-agreement/Okta administrator . Will it truly benefit residents and small businesses, or is it just a way to smooth over the controversy? Looking forward to seeing how this unfolds in the coming months.:(

What a disgraceful waste of public money

I feel like the only solution would be to pass a federal law forbidding these types of deals.

They are essentially extortion on the part of the team owners and bribery on the side of the cities. All at the expense of tax payers.

Funnily enough everywhere does it differently, in Europe most football teams own their own stadiums (Except in Italy where they are traditionally owned and maintained by the local council, there was a movement to self ownership recently.) Here ownership can be mixed, sometimes its the state government, sometimes its the teams or leagues that own stadiums, in the case of the iconic MCG its owned by a trust but I'm pretty sure the state government has a significant degree of control of the trust.

The idea of building an arena outside of the Philly sports complex is extremely dumb. The current location is perfect, it’s extremely accessible from downtown or the suburbs

Much more money in it for developers and the uber rich in a new development then refurbishing the existing one.

Yep. It won’t become as bad as Brooklyn but I wonder if it’ll be a bit like that. A major pain in the *** to get to and to park which will hurt ticket sales. Not immediately but maybe by year 3-4.

Getting through center city was already a **** show on most days for just about anything if you have to come from the burbs by car. Maybe they are hoping for solid metro adoption to the arena, but good lord parking a car will be a joke.
