Pick Up CJ's Option Already

If you pick up CJ today, and he breaks his leg tomorrow, you just lost 3.7 million of cap space going into a very uncertain CBA. Kind of a no brainer to wait it out.

They will match it on the last day possible. If they don't we have no outside threat besides Memo.
I think CJ was finally starting to get it towards the end of last year. Give him another year.

Yes, I have a good feeling about THIS year...

Wait, the Jazz can do that? They could trade his cap number and the other team could not exercise the option?

No. You cannot trade his option. You'd have to wait until he is picked up and then you might even have to wait until August or some hold period to actually trade him.

I sorta like Miles, but only when he decides that he should drive first and then go to his jumper. The double edge sword with him seems to be that as a streak shooter there are times when he can't miss, but he seems to rely on that and then just chucks and chucks and chucks to the detriment of the team. That being said, if he could ever learn to just be aggressive at first and then let his shot follow I think he has a place on the Jazz. He seems to pass ok which would give him more open looks later in the game. I just don't know if he'll ever learn that.

I'm as big a Miles homer as anyone, and I say don't pick up the option. He has more skill offensively than any one on the Jazz, but he does not have the mental fortitude to turn in to the force I thought he would be. I'd rather have him than Raja, but I'd also rather have a root canal than Raja. Time to sever ties.

Pick up CJ for the unintentional comedy. If the season goes bad, throw him some minutes so we can all make fun of him when he chucks up a wide open 3.

Why would you ever just get rid of a guy who has value? I can see KOC trading Miles. I cannot see dropping him for 3.7 million in savings.

Could we use the extra 3.7 million to frontload a contract to steal Aaron Aflalo from the Nuggets?

If yes I say got for it. I don't know after the 08-09 season I had high expectations with CJ and just been left dissapointed the past two seasons.

Can you plan on that working? And how much do you want to overpay Aflalo to prevent Denver from matching? Aflalo is a nice player, but an average to borderline starter.

clutch stats from last season(game close, late in games):
https://www.82games.com/1011/CSORT6.HTM

Afflalo is unfazed in these situation as he shoots 50%(which is just behind Millsap)
Miles shoots 22% in these situations which is 4th worst league-wide

If you can't hit the shots in the buckle up moments what are u worth to us.

Can you plan on that working?

No guarantees that it works but it at leasts forces denver to think about it like portland made us think about matching matthews.

That's a pretty dodgy reason to go after a player. Aflalo is what he is. A good spot shooter who can't drive, plays good defense, and is only an average athlete.

Jazz will pick up his option on the last day. Probably some high level discussions on whether to make an offer to AK or keep CJ for one more season. With the development of Hayward and the drafting of Burks, you don't need both. I'm for keeping CJ one more season. Burks comes off the bench until he's ready for major minutes. If CJ plays the 3, Jazz could also play Hayward more at SG if that's the plan. Miles would have value at the deadline as a backup for a contender or as an expiring contract.

well it's more than that, i am a big ucla basketball fan and loved the kid and always wanted him in utah but unforutantely the jazz had their mind made up on Mo Almond. I've watched him grow a ton as a player so I would expect him to only continue getting better. i don't see the same growth in miles game.

I agree with this. Plus I think CJ's contract is more that reasonable for what he gives us. We would have to pay Aflalo over 2 times that much and for a lot longer period of time.

No, maybe not...I thought they could do that on a team option but not a player option, but Larry Coon disagrees with me. I am certain that you can trade a player with a non-guaranteed contract and then waive him, but maybe options all work differently. I'll research more later.
