What's new

Planning on moving to SLC. Need helpful advice.

#1 reason my wife will never let us move back. Our kids had bronchitis like clock work. Half my nieces and nephews have asthma.
Ya it takes its toll on your health for sure. It's the reason I ever even consider moving away.

I do miss it, my wife would be open to St. George, Heber or Park City. Problem is the first city has no jobs and the other two the commute would be a bitch.

The biggest downside that I see is wages. Utah does have low unemployment and a low cost of living but wages more than negate that. You are going to make more doing the same job elsewhere. Last year SLC was ranked the toughest market for first time home buyers. Prices of homes as well as rents have gone up much faster than wages. Rents in Sugarhouse went up 20 percent last year alone. I might have told a truck driver from Texas different a few years ago but not now. I wouldn't want to be trying to establish myself in this city today.

I agree with this assessment. I have family in Texas, and they make more money and pay less for houses than we do here. Utah in general is really competitive.

Just get a job that lets you work from home at least half the time. I have a buddy who just moved to St. George, and only comes up to SLC once a month to check in at work. He loves it. I know it's not for everyone, and not every job will let you do that, but it would pretty awesome to live in one of those areas. Of course, Heber can get an inversion too, but not nearly as bad as SLC

That's a great setup. I would love to live in St. George.

Damn, I was really looking forward to being like a season ticket holder and going to a lot of Jazz games. I may just move to Colorado so I don't have to pay an arm and a leg for a round trip flight. I have horrible allergies and air quality, is probably one of those things I need to be concerned about majorly. I'm not anywhere set to move yet. I need about 8 months for this to happen.

Don't say Killeen. That place is cheap but it's a military ****hole.

No, Temple.

If you've got allergies then central Texas is way worse. Nothing has kicked my *** more than cedar season here. People complain about the inversion but unless you've got COPD or bad asthma I wouldn't worry about the allergy thing anymore than I would in Texas.

Doesn't it matter what a person is allergic to?

Sure. I mean what people are talking about is the inversion which will bring bad air quality but not necessarily allergens from pollen and such. If someone has bad allergies around central Texas, an inversion is an apples and oranges discussion.

Oh oh oh I want to meet one please come TFP

No, Temple.

Temple might as well be Killeen. They're right next door to eachother.

TFP, don't let all these guys fool you, Salt Lake is a great place to live. Sure you have things to deal with, but everywhere has that. The positives in Salt Lake far outweigh the negatives.

You mean suburban wasteland. There is very little in this state than can be characterized as urban. If you want to protect your community from encroaching suburban sprawl then write your representative and tell him to invest more in cities like Provo, SLC, and Ogden. These cities would happily absorb much of the growth but there are things that need to get done for it to happen. It is urbanism and greater density that will ultimately protect your exurban lifestyle.
