What's new

play along: What could Trey + #23 get us?

Smart > >>> Trey.

But I don't even want Smart really.

But...
A PG who can defend, push the pace, and get to the rim is much more valuable than a slow PG who shoots a poor % except at the end of the game, can't get to the rim, and can't defend. The PG who can't shoot isn't nearly as big of a deal as any other player who can't shoot. He has the ball in his hands, and if he's a threat at the rim, he still has to be guarded.

I'm really tired of all the people tossing Trey aside.

Are you ****ing kidding me? We moved up to get him, NCAA player of the year, ice in his veins end of game killa, fearless, top 3 in rookie of the year voting....
and some of you knuckleheads are ready to toss him aside? For who? Smart? Give me a ****ing break. Smart could bust. He's small as ****. Or he could turn into a decent Nate Robinson type.

Now there is nothing wrong with floating trade ideas about any of our players. I have nothing against this thread per say I've just been seeing a lot of people dissing Trey lately, and I came in here to vent. I think Trey Burke will have a better pro career than Smart. Let's see what happens though. Smart could explode. I guess I just don't see why people are trashing Trey, and wanting to replace him already. Seems nuts to me.

wow. I didn't expect a wild, hotttnickkk-level fail from you.

Yes - I would 'toss him aside' for a player who can drive to the rim at will and defend. Smart is very similar to Wade. I want a PG who can actually defend because defense shows up every night. I'm tired of watching the other team's PG school us each and every game because Burke can't get lateral.

Smart is better than Burke. He will have a better career. Also, as others have pointed out, I don't know why you're calling Smart small. He's over 6'3 and strength-wise he's one of the strongest point guards to come out of the draft combine.

Ummm, did you mean to say Burke is small as ****? I think Marcus has him by 3+ inches.

true true. but hes proven in my mind that his size isnt going to severely limit him in the NBA. we dont know that about smart yet.

Also, I will go on record to say I was HUGE on us drafting Burke last year. He's not a scrub but if we can move him for Smart I would prefer Smart. If Smart was a mediocre defender he would probably be drafted toward the end of the lottery (perhaps not even in the lottery).

But he's a VERY GOOD defender and his passing skills around pretty similar to Burke's, numbers-wise. Though I think Burke had a higher number of offensively-gifted teammates during his time at Michigan.

Yes - Smart needs to work on his shooting but he's got the tools needed to be a great NBA player.

he wont be anywhere near as good in the nba as wade. he'll be much close to nate robinson.

Smart is half a foot taller than Robinson and plays a very different game. Robinson is actually a pretty good shooter from behind the ark and is very tough (similar to Wade and Smart). But Robinson is know to be a liability on defense.

Like Wade, Smart is a very good defender. Robinson is not known for his rebounding. Smart is a very good rebounder, like Wade. Also, if you watch college games with Smart, you will quickly see he's an opportunist - part of the reason why he gets tons of steals and drives to the basket for an easy shot (I've also seen him cut to the basket for a fair amount of lay-ups/ally-oops) and finally, like Wade, most of Smart's threes are when he's open.

For hell sake, Smart >>>> Burke. It isn't close.

I, too, lobbied for Burke. But I've seen what I've seen. Exum or Smart would be an upgrade + we can move Burke for a good asset. What's not to like?

Huh?
Burke shot <40%, can't get to the rim and can't get around anyone. I'd say his size - and lack of quickness - definitely limits him in the NBA.

If that is the route the FO takes then I will hate to see Burke go as I like him but in the pursuit of a championship no player is untouchable.

I'd rather see them try and get a deal with the Cavs for the #1 pick though.

Smart:Robinson as Burke:Palacio

JK, Rev9. Burke can become a serviceable PG. Jazz will need to upgrade at some point in order to contend, but he's fine for now. If the Jazz stay at #5, I'd much rather have them take Vonleh or Gordon who could both develop into all-stars.

You're not playing along very well.

c'mon dude..... everybody would prefer this over staying at #5. But since it isn't going to happen.............................

Boston seems set on Aaron Gordon.

Where did you hear that? I live near Boston and haven't heard any specific guys they've talked about. Not saying they wouldn't because Ainge is a pretty good GM. I have heard more about the Celtics wanting to get a true center so Sullinger can play his true position more.

I like Trey but this thread was started to see what we could get for Trey and #23. I am just saying that if some team loved Trey and they were willing to give us a top pick I would consider it. It isn't hating on him. I would probably be more willing to do it if the Jazz were able to get Exum with the 5th pick. Then I would trade Burke for another lottery pick if I was enamored with some one (i.e. Gordon, Saric, McDermott, Young etc).

I don't think it's impossible. Unlikely sure.

But I'd rather see what players there are instead of just another pick.

I'd trade Burke for and the #23 for as high as possible (#7) and as low as #12. Nothing less. And only if the Jazz draft Smart or Exum.
If we could move him for Rondo or Westbrook level players i'd be down with that. The only question what other pieces we'd have to let go to get one of the top tier guys.

I like Trey, but lets be clear: If he was coming out in this draft and had just led his team to the Final game and lost to lets say Shabazz Napier of UCON he would be battling out the 5th PG off the board late in the first round with Napier.

Napier is at best 20 and worst 30. Trey would be the same. There just aren't as many teams needing a PG in this draft and those that do, or are looking to be taking one don't necessarily want the PG as a starter. Napier is widely considered a very good back up PG who will likely be taken 22-28. Payton will likely be taken 14-21 and will likely be a back up as well.

PG's to be taken before Burke and Napier:

Exum
Smart
Payton
Ennis

and it is likely the latter 2 are expected to be back ups.

We have to come to grips with last years draft. IT WAS that bad! I felt we should have taken Steven Adams because I think he is a legit defensive center that will get better and better. That said Trey was a decent pick and in a draft where we were looking for a PG and leadership I was happy with the pick. But that doesn't mean he is a career starter. Right now and for the forseeable future he is a bottom 5 starting PG in the league.

If someone wants him, great! I would trade him and #23 if we could some how move up to #12-#16 if we can get a shooter like McDermott if he slips, Stauskis, or even moving up to get Payton or Ennis. But I just don't see any takers when few teams need a PG and their are 5 better than Burke in this draft.
