Players that could be had for Memo TPE

When the Jazz did the trade for Jefferson, they used a TPE from the sign-and-trade with Boozer to Chicago, and also included Kosta Koufos, and maybe a 2nd-round pick, didn't they? If so, it would seem that a TPE can be used in combination with a player or a pick.

You can combine players, but the TPE doesn't get any bigger because you add players. Boozer's (first-year) salary (on his new contract) was bigger than Jefferson's, hence, they could absorb it. But again, the TPE didn't grow with the addition of Koufos (and certainly not with the addition of picks).

Would Andre Igoudala be able to be had for TPE + Bell or Miles? Not that I really want him, but he seems like a player that his current team wouldn't mind trading for less than his actual value to clear up space for Evan Turner.

The guy has a chronic arthritic condition in his knee that isn't going away and he's guaranteed for 3 years at a very high price. The Lakers can take that risk. We can't.

I know when you trade players it has to be within 50%, so if you trade a 10 million player you can get a 15 million. Don't know if that is the same with TPE?
Unless something has changed, there's no flexibility in salary matching. The salary absorbed is either smaller than the TPE, or it's not absorbed.

In short, no (unless, again, something has changed).

I think the Jazz, with two picks in the next draft, are looking to increase their assets. A TPE, player swap and pick swap could be attractive to a number of teams. If the Jazz make a move, I assume it would be for a stud PG (if there is one) or a more consistent shooter.

There's one other possibility here--and that's involving Paul Millsap. I know he's supposedly injured, but I thought it was odd that he wasn't mentioned during the last game, and part of me is wondering if he's being held out to be involved in a trade. If I'm the Celtics or the Magic and I think I've got one more shot this year, I would talk to KOC about Millsap. However, I doubt Millsap would be moved unless there is something significant coming back.

Has anyone heard how long Millsap is expected to be out?

I don't.

But I also think that the likelihood of Millsap getting moved just dropped significantly. Something had to give at the 4 and 5, and something did.

Not to obsess, but I'm wondering about those odd rumors that the Jazz were talking to Detroit (e.g., Stuckey).
I'm also wondering what OJ Mayo is up to these days.

If the Jazz make a move, I assume it would have to be to improve the backcourt.

Correct as long as the CBA didn't change on this. I doubt it did.

Yeah, the Jazz can now add a player. But I think KOC is thinking more about the alternatives. With the TPE, the Jazz will be on speed dial to facilitate a lot of 3 team deals. The ability to take on undesirables is very valuable. That said, he may already have another deal in the works. Exciting times in Jazzland.

KOC is the best GM in the league. Everytime this team gets in a slump he pulls something like this out and resurrects hope. He is a magician.

KOC for GM of the entire decade.

I think Utah will hold on to it until next season. The TPE gives us room to improve after other limits are reached.

Considering KOC's job security, my guess is he's not even thinking of using it on anything but youth. He has no pressure to win now. I trust the guy completely. But if he called me (and I'm very available for this) I would tell him that he needs to take this year and really assess his (read: MY) team. Build around the best players, use the rest as assets.

The great thing is I really think KOC is going to ace this. He's no longer the GM trying to put parts around superstars and appease a coach who has more power than him. He's now the guy who can put any team he wants on the floor. This is what hasn't happened in Jazzland like...ever.

Yep to all of this. Great post, rep'd.

Very true. I'm sure he's felt like his hands were tied and probably was pretty frustrated when he couldn't go after certain players that were available. Look how quick he dealt Deron. Look at the kind of players we've signed so far. Trading Okur had to be hard but it's starting to seem like there's a vision that KOC has. I just wish I knew if we were holding onto the TPE for a bad contract combined with 2012 high draft picks. That's what I'd do, if I were him.

"Thursday's deal also gives the Jazz a trade exception, which Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor said will "allow us to go shopping.""

I doubt we'll be going for a big man. Probably a SG who can hit 3s. But who knows? Maybe a PG? ;-)
