Please don't sneeze - you may get me in trouble.

Punch Bowl Re-Filler
I've already removed "God" from the equation - and it took years to break that habit. Now, apparently saying "Bless You" is offensive. From now on, maybe I'll just get mad when someone sneezes or say "See a doctor."

This teacher needs to be suspended, not the student. But, of course, she won't (teachers' unions and all). Is it any wonder charter schools are becoming increasingly popular and public education districts are lobbying Congress to try to stop them?

Why? The student was obviously discriminating against non-religious students and faculty, right?

I was wondering the same thing. I don't know if CoreDurka has any idea what she actually believes/thinks.

Re: the article, I found this to be very chortle inducing:

For whatever reason, the school will not explain why the teacher has an issue with the words “bless you.” This one is a head-scratcher, folks. But one thing is clear – religious intolerance is nothing to sneeze at.

Quite comical, coming from Fox News, who is the catalyst to pretty much all anti-Islam in this country.

"Bless You" has no religious connotations,

Given your bragging about 3-somes, I'm not sure you are really sincere in YOUR beliefs. Perhaps the social aspect of your faith is far more important to you than the tenets.

AS for this report, it has nothing to do with monetary discounts. The teacher - and read the full report - has apparently been pretty antagonistic towards those who have any religious beliefs. I had a couple of teachers like that. But none who would EVER kick a kid out of class for letting something slip.

LDS members may find this funny: back in HS I had early morning seminary (I'm not from Utah). You kind of get in a certain mindset, calling the seminary teacher and adults who pick you up Brother and Sister. So we get to school, morning homeroom and my friend raises his hand and accidentally addresses the school teacher, who is anti-Mormon, as Brother Clarkson. The teacher gives him a look that could absolutely kill and says, "I am NOT your brother nor a member of your church." There were about 5 LDS students in the room and we were doing our best not to roll on the floor in laughter. Point is, there was no harm done. The teacher didn't need to suspend the kid.

"Bless You" is a common response in this country, just as Gesundheit is in Germany, or Saude in Brazil. What's next, the teacher requires students to carry Euros because US money has the phrase "In God We Trust?"

I agree Core 4. I was just ribbing you.

I was the Seminary president for early morning Seminary out in my Missippi town for 3 out of 4 years. We had alot of BK visits at 6:30. I'd spend the entire time flirting with this girl named Stacey, Man oh man was she hot. Seminary was great!

I was always told that Constitutional rights don't apply at school.

Regardless this teacher is an idiot.

Which always made me laugh. They also tried to tell me they had the right to hit (paddle) me. That didn't go over well either. Was sent out in the hall once and a coach came by with his paddle. Came up to my to hit me and I told him not to touch me. He got pissed and asked what I said and I repeated myself and that he could call my parents and send me home but he wasn't hitting me. That's exactly what he did and my dad whopped me good that night (I deserved it). But my parents called the school following that and told them I am not to be hit by a school official, ever. That if there is a problem to let them know and they will do it as my parents.

Lecturers were too scared of Boris. They would not dare strike.

Coach wasn't scared at all. In fact it looked like he had a hard time not kicking my butt. As for me I wasn't confrontational. Just told him no and that he could call my parents and send me home. I had been coached by my parents to do so.

We say in our language " stay healthy" or "to your health" to the person who sneezes. On the other hand "God bless you" does not offend me in as an atheist in any way. Some people need to get a life.

The only problem I have with USA banknotes that I do not have millions of them in my bank account. Otherwise it could say AKMVP sucks for all I care.

In spanish it is "salud" which means "health". I agree that this teacher needs to get a life.

We say "Çok yaşa or "İyi yaşa" which means "Live long or "Live healthy/well". Quite similar I think.

The US have exported too much democracy and freedom in the last decades. I think they should start to import some to balance it.

Rich and compelling, really. I was a convert at 25. As for social aspect of my faith... Is there such a thing? (Other than half of my ward are likely social retards)

Yeah I have never felt like I fit in with the "social" aspects of the church either.

When I get together with a group of my friends from work or from the neighborhood, like in our annual back to school barbecue (in 2 weeks btw), it is generally very casual, easy conversations, laughter, and fun, and several of the families that are coming are LDS and we get along great.

When I get together for a "ward activity" I feel like I am on parade more than anything else, and being watched. I get a feeling of fake smiles and underlying tension that, while not in any way overwhelming, is definitely palpable. Like tonight we had a talent show for our kids. My daughters did a few acts and it was generally pretty fun. But the conversations were all kind of uncomfortable. People checking themselves, at once wanting to talk about what is going on in their lives, and at the same time trying hard not to admit to anything that would be less than mormon-like, or take you down a rung on the righteousness ladder, and then also trying to one-up each other in off-hand kind of ways. Even conversations with the same mormons who come to our neighborhood get together feels kind of off somehow. Just really weird. I would take the sinners over the saints for a backyard barbecue any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

edit:

I wanted to add to this. One thing that stands out is with our back to school barbecue it is fun talking about things like the new car one guy got, or another guy's new Harley. We all rib each other good-naturedly, but no one feels like the other is bragging or anything. Just people are comfortable talking about their lives in a real way since it is a safe and inviting environment. One friend who happens to be mormon recently got a new rider lawn mower. He was talking it up at our place a few weekends ago. I ran into him at the talent show and asked him if he was having fun sitting down to mow his lawn. and he just brushed it aside, and acted embarrassed that anyone would accuse him of having a riding lawn mower as if he would be labeled lazy or prideful or something. I don't know, it was just weird, and I am probably reading too much into it. But I just wonder sometimes why can't we feel free to talk about stuff like that without the specter of judgement hanging out there like that. Weird.
