Poll: Hayward - Will a deal get done or not ?

Haywards Deal

The most important thing in the above article is the reminder that the new CBA is designed to pay loads to superstars while the middle class of the NBA gets shafted. The superstars will always get the money, but Hayward isn't a superstar, so unless the Jazz know something that the rest of the NBA doesn't, he just isn't going to get paid like a superstar. Favors got a pretty good paycheck but that is at least in part because he has superfreaky measurements and has already shown to be elite defensively. While Hayward has shown to be a good team player jack of all trades, he hasn't shown any elite abilities that I have seen. He is the best all around player that I have seen in years, but unless he grows a better wingspan, jumps like Evans, gains the speed of Paul or the shoots like Ray Allen, he's just a solid very useful complimentary player.

BTW Manu Ginobili is making seven million dollars this year. (edit, it would appear that the most he ever made in a season was fourteen million, and that was after years of experience. His first non rookie contract averaged about nine million, and this is in the old CBA where teams could easily go over the cap if they wanted.)

I will repost post from other website where one guy looked at cap space and all other possible scenarios.

Gordon will not be getting an offer over $11M per in the off-season. Who is going to give it to him. Celtics will usually be the first team out of peoples mouths.... Really with Jeff Greene and Wallace eating up wing /SF minutes? Not likely. Boston will likely end up in the top 5 and will be looking for a player at the wing to be its next Paul Pierce. They are still years away and aren't in a position to overpay to become mediocre... Ainge is too smart for that. Most teams who might... and I stress might be interested in Haryward are they really going to be in a rush to overpay a non-allstar? No, and it is more likely that they will draft a wing this year that they will build around rather than overpay for someone elses non-allstar wing. Gordon Hayward is not a championship piece... He is a complimentary piece. Is LAL going to pay for an above average SF? No way. They will go gang busters for Lebron and then when he decides to stay in Miami or return to Cleveland are they going to please their fan base with Haryward? No.Bring it Board: Who is going after Hayward at $11MPortland-noPhoenix-maybe but the draft may preclude them and the whole point that you don''t go for a middling FA when you still suck.LAC-NoMem-No cappedSA-No cappedHouston-no capped and parsonsDallas-close to cappedMinny-no cappedDenver- no cappedNOLA- no cappedAtl- no cappedSac-no mostly capped with upcoming wingOKC-cappedNYC-cappedWas- capped beal on the way etcTor-capped gay wont opt outCharlotte-Maybe, but would hayward go play there.. noBKL-cappedIND- cappedMil- CappedCHi- cappedCLE- capped and waiting for lebronOrl- drafting wings and have them in the stable already Harkless, Tobias, Oladipo, AfflaloPhi- maybe, but who will they be drafingDet- cappedSo to review you are left with the very unlikely "MAYBE" scenarios of: Boston, Charlotte, Philly Phoenix, and maybe throw in a surprise or two. But really this new CBA doesn't lend itself to overpaying for players unless they are superstars. I like Gordon but he is no superstar and won't be getting that kind of money and interest.

I agree with many/most of those points. But again, Locke's point is that Hayward's agent likely doesn't see it that way. That's why I myself voted for the fourth choice in the poll. I think Hayward's going to wait until next season, I think he'll get an offer in the $10-11 mill range, and I think the Jazz will match.

Oh, and tell the guy you are quoting to please see my sig. :-)

(I'm on a one man crusade.)

Hayward and the deal are being panned hard on ISH. Comments like "white guy bonus", "no tan clause" and "If Gordon Hayward is your third best player, your going to have a bad time"

haha. Can't wait for our youth to turn heads and raise blood pressure when they start balling.

lol say wut now?

Everyone keeps saying he's not a superstar. Yes, he's not in the LeBron, Kobe, Durant group. But I think he's regarded as having the potential to be in the next tier down. He's valued enough to have been invited to the national team workouts and will likely be on the next US Olympic team. He's a 40% shooter from 3-PT range and someone who is going to have a huge role in the offense, both in terms of scoring chances and distributing the ball. He's also an underrated defender, with incredible chase-down ability and decent ability to steal the ball. And he creates mismatches when playing the 2. Hayward is going to put up impressive all-around numbers this season without Jefferson, Mo and Foye hogging the ball (and Millsap trying to get a few shots somehow as well). Make no mistake, Gordon WILL get some big offers next season.

Whoever is saying that crap about sucking if hayseed is your third best player is crazy. If he is your best player, your cap is the Denver nuggets of last year, unless you have like three other borderline all stars. Then it's the 00's pistons. Great team, occasional championship. Hayward as your third best player means your team is probably awesome. Eve more awesome than everyone but the spurs and heat lately.

You're talking about Hayward being the fourth best player like on a Piston squad with three to four to five bonafide All Stars? Agreed.

You're talking about Hayward being the fourth best player on a team without two top ten players? Fuggedaboutit.

At the end of the day, it comes down to guaranteed money. If the Jazz are offering 9 per, and Hayward thinks there is a chance he could make 11, he will sign the deal for 9.

Why?

Because a 4 year 9 million dollar deal comes out to 36 million guaranteed. GUARANTEED. In his pocket today.

A 4 year 11 per year comes out to 44 million or 8 million more. Sounds great, BUT a few things have to happen. 1- He has to have a great year. 2 - The Jazz have to get him the ball. 3 - He can't get hurt.

Imagine if he has a bad year. Or Burke and Favors are ball hogs and he only gets 10 shots a night. Or he blows his knee out the first week of the season. 36 million gone. Poof.

He is 23. He will be 28 when this deal expires and he can get another BIG deal. Take the money. His agent will push for 11. The Jazz will push for 8. Come the day of the deadline, they will compromise and he will extend for 9-10 a year. Maybe 9 with incentives that push it to 11. So everyone wins.

Call me racist, but I would not match any offer, beyond 8 Million Dollars.
I will definitely call you a racist if you are saying that his skin color has anything to do with why you hold this opinion. (And that's exactly what it sounds like you're saying.) Call me color blind but the shade of an athlete's skin has absolutely nothing to do with the way I would evaluate their talent. The same goes for the color of a scientist's skin or a teacher's skin or a message board poster's skin or a janitor's skin or any other person's skin. I'm amazed (in a bad way) that so many people still believe they can make valid conclusions of any kind about an individual based upon the amount of melanin in their skin.

Jazz would likely match any offer, so if they are looking for something 12+ jazz say prove you can get it in the summer. Point is he will be a jazzman for a very long time regardless if it happens now or the summer.

Well, I take that back. You can conclude about their likelihood to get a sunburn, or how well they will show up if you photograph them against a specific background, or what color shirt they look best in, or how well new a tattoo will show up... but you can't possibly say how much they might be worth simply by looking at the color of their skin. It pisses me off that people say such idiotic things. And Cakar, just in case you haven't heard me yet, your a racist and it's too bad that you're apparently proud of that.
