What's new

Portland Trailblazers @ OUR Utah Jazz TODAY at 1900.

I do think last night may have been a little bit of an indictment on DL. Aminu and Harkless both were great last night and both would have filled needs for us. We could have had either guy and many were clamoring for these guys. We went status quo because of chemistry and it is pretty clear we could use one or both of those guys.

I know he is a good defender and stuff, but I don't believe he is that good. He nearly cancels himself out with how bad he is offensively. If we were, as a group, a better offensive team we would probably afford to play him more, but we can't.

Also, he would foul out within 12 minutes guarding Lillard. He hand checks way too much on the perimeter to get away with guarding a PG of his caliber.

We really should have put Hayward on Lillard. I think he got switched on him once and really had a nice contest on Lillard's 3pt shot. The problem is that he switched off Harkless who posted up Burke..... I miss Dante. The advantages you get with a 6'6 defensive PG on switches can't be understated.

I think you need to stick with the defensive identity that allowed you to be so successful at the end of last year. Exum was for sure a big part of that, but Millsap's role is underrated A LOT. In a game like that, the Jazz needed something to turn the tides and slow McCollum or Lillard down. It was obvious we couldn't play the same create your own shot game they were playing and catch up, it just couldn't happen. We needed stops, the Jazz feed off big defensive stops, and Millsap can provide that on the perimeter. Sure he individually cancels out with his terrible offense, but as he a team he brings a lot of positives on the defensive end and Quin said it himself, the offense wasn't the problem it was the defense.

Jazz win the low 80 games. Those are the games they want. There is a reason Millsap is in the NBA. I like him as a Tony Allen type player (no he's not AS good but he makes a difference on the defensive end like Allen). I know the trick is to find a way to be top 10 defensively and offensively, that's the ticket to the playoffs/championships. Millsap doesn't have to get 20-25 minutes a night but having a guy on our bench that we could throw in games where we just need physicality on the perimeter is there and we didn't use him last night.

Millsap does foul a lot, he plays physical. Even if he did foul out in 12 minutes (which apparently your crystal ball is telling you?), those 12 minutes could have gone a long way in taking Lillard out of his game.

Unrelated but I was saying all game McCollum was the x-factor. He had a better game than Lillard, the focus should have started with stopping him really.

I wanted the Jazz to take Harkless.

Anyway I'm fed up of this story of team chemistry. This team has to be improved with smart additions through free agency.

Fair point.

Many brought the guy up. He was a good prospect playing for the worst coach in the NBA last year (or close to it). I thought the reason Orlando hadn't moved him was they were asking too much. Porty got him for a second rounder.

Many people liked Aminu (I believe Cy liked him a lot) he can play both forward positions and is a really good defender. He has an improved jumper and was seemingly overpaid, but not really after watching what Lamb and Ross got. Could have taken Booker's minutes. Allowed for some position flexibility as well.

No... it will make me sad to think about what could have been with CJ on our team.

Here's a bump from 18 months ago in a free agency thread.

What type of free agent thread would this be without me mentioning;

Let me restate the case, for Aminu;

We still need an oversized, defensive minded SF. Aminu can play PF in spots too. He is absolutely a top tier rebounder from the SF spot, this guy is about the size of Favors, At this point in his career i dont mind comparing Aminu to a Giannis that cant shoot, his ballskills are not what giannis shows either, but he'd suprise ya tbh, hes very capable of grabbing a D reb and dribbling it up the court. Not much of an offensive weapon, hes a rebounder and a slasher, hes a good player to have in the rotation to switch up the look defensively vs top tier forwards. Hes still pretty young too he turns 24 near the start of the season. He knows his lane on offense, doesn't take many bad shots.

Hes very professional and supposed to be a great locker room guy. his nicknames 'the chief' I think he fits here, and you can likely get him on a multi year deal for CHEAP.

Imagine Portland with Burke rather than McCollum.

Burke and McCollum are two different type of players with differing skillset. McCollum has the size and shooting ability to be a pure scorer in the league. Trey had to be a true PG in order to live up to his full potential. Clearly what Portland needs is a pure scorer and not a true PG seeing they have Lillard playing the 1.

Put Trey on a team where he can dominant the ball and with his current play he'll be a guy putting up even better numbers than he has.

It kills me when people make one to one comparisons to players without considering the situation. No way McCollum has the same freedom to take 18 shots per game in Snyder system with this team healthy like it is. Who is CJ taking shots from Hayward, Favors, Hood, Burks, and/or Gobert? Portland needs CJ to be that aggressive offensively at all times. McCollum would have to wait for his offense much like Trey is doing. Trey is actually making 50% of his shot(more than that if you subtract the two half court shots)

I'm not a Trey hater... CJ looked better last night than Trey ever has. Snyder has given Hood a lot of freedom to create and score. If he had CJ and knew his abilities my guess is he'd have similar freedom.

CJ is better than Trey and it isn't about the situation. Both guys shot 13 shots last night. CJ made more of his. Right now I'd give CJ a ton of shots if he were on this squad. He could have some of Hayward's, Hood's, and Burks for sure... as well as all of Trey's.

He fouls a ton, cant shoot at all, is super turnover prone, will spazz out on the court.

So one game makes one guy better than the other guy? It's fair that you think McCollum is better as good as Trey has been early this season CJ has been better. However IMO a lot of that is because Burke isn't given the same freedom to play a style that fits his skillset. Trey has been great not just shooting but running the offense. Burke has done a better job creating for his teammates than McCollum, however statistically it doesn't matter if guys are either missing or passing up on those looks.

Again you can't just say I'd give CJ a ton of shots. You have to say who would you take said shots from? Everybody bitched about Burke shooting during the preseason saying how it was taking shots from whichever player. Who is going to sacrifice their shots to make room for CJ to take close to 20 shots a game?

I couldn't recall... I think it was PGAB that pushed him hard. I liked him and thought he was gettable. I think it is time for a couple minor tweaks to our bench bigs if Booker doesn't pick it up soon. Book and Lyles are by far our biggest weakness right now. Would have been nice if one of those guys would have picked it up a bit since Favs wasn't 100%.

No I was saying CJ last night looked better than Burke has ever looked in any night. Burke has been good... I'm pleased with him. Our offense is pretty awful saying we wouldn't have shots for CJ is ridiculous. Trey had freedom in the past and it wasn't great. CJ shoots 18 shots a night... Give him Trey's 9, one from each guy in the starting lineup, one of Booker/Ingles/etc. You could get close to 18 really quick.

Burke has played well, and good for him... I'm happy for him. He's taken a little more abuse than he deserves. CJ is the better player though and it's not close.
