Just zoomed in on it using photoshop and it appears to be a huge tracking device glued to its back.

4 day/3 night hiking safari!
This lion was originaly laying on his back, we luckly saw his leg poking out of the grass and stopped about 35yds from him. He eventually lifted his head when he heard some buffalo across the way but didn't see us, plus we were down wind and snapped this great pic.
Snaped this pic while I was holding the rangers gun as we hiked down a steep cliff!
I took this picture standing right next to my tent, this elephant was only 30ft away.
