What's new

Post your early prediction for our roster next year

What exactly has Lindsey done since he took over for KOC?
Lindsey did NOT take over for KOC. O'Connor is still in charge. Their titles had to change because in order for a team to request an interview - which is almost always granted - the new position must be a promotion. Lindsey was already an assistant GM, so KOC had to be named Chief Papa Bear so Lindsey could come in as the GM, not as an assistant. The Millers have always been thrifty with the FO. They use Miller Group personnel (Rigby) to also run their basketball operations. And Sloan was always mucking around in personnel matters, so he was essentially an assistant GM. Another factor was the lack of player movement and trades. When all you do is add a couple of draft picks and perhaps 1 minor FA each year, the GM can handle the paperwork without having an assistant.

However, the Jazz will be going through tremendous upheaval this off-season. Next year will be even more stressful on the FO than when Stockton and Malone left. The Jazz had Ostertag and Harpring back as starters and moved AK into the lineup. They signed Arroyo to be the starting SG and traded Stevenson for Giricek. This off-season, all of the current starters are FA's. I expect Marvin wil opt in. The Jazz will likely want Mo and Foye back, but those contracts still need to be hammered out. Jazz were looking at a probable lottery pick until GS improved unbelievably. That takes a little stress off scouting for the draft. Now they're looking at all the 2nd-tier guys for both picks and can forget about the top-10 prospects...unless there's a chance to move up.

Draft picks, re-negotiations, FA evaluations, etc. There was no way one man could handle all that work, especially with Sloan not around to contribute on the player evaluation front. So the Jazz were forced to do what almost every team does: hire an assistant GM. They wanted Lindsey, but couldn't have him come in with that title. Lindsey will certainly contribute, but his role right now may not be significantly different than what it was in SA. KOC will still be the decision-maker, set the negotiating parameters and Lindsey will handle the paperwork and fine print on the contracts. But he is being groomed to be KOC's eventual successor, whenever that may be. I'll bet KOC stays around until at least 2015. He'll want to see this through with Favors, Hayward, Kanter and Burks. Get them signed to long-term deals and then put a few guys around them. If there's a chance to be a contender, he'd want to bask in that glory, as it was his work to get all of those guys.

So we draft Otto Porter amd Trey Burke? Thats one hell of a draft. I hope it happens. I like Otto too. I just dont know if we will draft high enough for both of them. We may need to use both picks just to get one.

1. Marvin Williams

7. Paul Millsap
8. Mo Williams
9. Randy Foye
10. Jamal Tinsley

12. Trey Burke

One Agent from other team(leave 15th spot empty for flexibility):

Ok, since we're stuck with Marvin next year (at least presumably) I hope we're considering using him as a back-up PF. I think he'd be best as backup PF/SF really.

Think optimistically.

More of a statement than a prediction, but it's time to roll with the core 4.

Favors and Kanter are the crown jewels of the D-Will trade. While I completely understand that throwing them to the wolves is/was a dicey situation, you also can't sit on them forever. It's time to see if we're going to get a return on our investment.

Big Al is not going to take anything less than $13 mil-per, and somebody is going to give it to him. Sap is going to almost certainly be looking for something around $10 mil-per. Utah shouldn't consider either of them at those prices.

Turn Hayward, Burks, Kanter, and Favors loose and see what they can do. If it results in a 30 win season, Utah will have the advantage of giving these kids minutes and a nice lottery pick to boot. That's how championship contenders are built.

I could see a scenario in which Utah retains Sap, starts Favors at the 5, and still brings Kanter off the bench. I can tolerate that because Kanter is still a bit raw, it helps maintain frontcourt depth, and IMO Favors is a 5 and would be better suited playing that position.

Either way, Utah needs to embrace the youth movement next year and all of the bumps that come along with it.

Essentially, I think if we keep Big Al the FO will structure the contract to be something like 18 million for year 1, 13 million for year 2, 9 million for year 3, and 7 million for year four. that would make it so when Hayward, Favors, Kanter, and Burks contracts kick in, Al would be relatively cheap. I would like to see the Jazz let Jefferson go and have Millsap, Favors, and Kanter as our big guys going forward. I would also kind of like to see the jazz let mo williams go

Mo(2yr/11mil)-Burks-Tinsley
Hayward-Foye(3yr/10mil)-BJ Young- Murphy(or Watson)
Aminu(4yr/24mil)-Marvin-Hayward
Favors-Kanter- SF/Olynyk- Richard Howell(47th pick)
Jefferson(4yr/48)-Kanter-Olynyk (or Willie Cauley-Stein)

My 2013 Outlook:
Agreeable Al gives us a market discount and frontloads the contract:cool:
Millsaps $ Pays Aminu and Mo, who gives us the injury/age discount.
Foye just wants shots, Marvin is the token "dont be this guy" for 1 more year.
i count 8 rookie contracts, 2 of which are RFA's, (and a legit 7footer).
We are staying frugal + under the cap now, so when the time is ready we can match all RFA's

Edit: i particularly like this idea because whos more loaded with assets to trade up high, in next years draft.

also Favors unleashing upon the league can be right next to Aminu whos actually the same size and athlete(&rebounder), but from SF. your not gonna find guys who can reach as far and jump as high as those 2, to help al on d.
(dx says hes about 1inch shorter all around, during the draft. but there was speculation Aminu grew at least another inch after his rookie year)

Jefferson takes a pay cut and Millsap signs for less than what Humphries got? We see Al's flaws, other teams, especially those starved for a franchise player, see a 20/10 guy who can carry their offense. I know it's a new CBA, but there will be teams with cap space. Al is going to get paid; there just aren't enough legit 5's to go around in this league. And if Millsap signs for less than 4/$48M, I'll be shocked.

I do agree, though, that Kanter could come off the bench another year if necessary.

I just listened to the interview with Lindsey. Dennis is a bit windy, but there was only one "No Comment" made in the entire interview. He was asked about Raja and said he had to honor the agreement he made with Herb (Raja's agent) and Raja not to talk about it. Based on the interview, it's safe to say the team will try to re-sign Foye and Carroll. I'm less convinced they'll try to keep Al and/or Paul. I just think the deals that were offered included some longer-term contracts the Jazz didn't want to assume. I got the impression they believe there will be some real steals this summer or at the next deadline as teams try to get under the luxury tax limit. Let's hope!
