Praise for Mudiay

I dont think it's a certainty he's out of the rotation. You need depth as well. You dont have to trade everyone on your roster who isnt going to be there next year.

Mudiay won't be out of the rotation when Conley comes back. He's one of our 8 best players. Quin will find ways to play our best.

I agree you need depth... injuries happen.

I know everyone keeps saying he will still be in the rotation... but then you do the math when Conley and DM are healthy... what position does he see playing time from? Say we have the following:

DM 32
Conley 28
Ingles 30
Bojan 32
Rudy 34 - 36 with Tony taking the other 12-14
Royce 28
JC 24

Leaves about 18 minutes at a SF/PF spot... that's with DM, Bojan, Conley, Ingles, Royce all below their average mpg... So Niang or Mudiay will likely not be in the rotation. It might be Niang, but I doubt we go with a 10 man rotation with Niang and Mudiay splitting the 12-14 minutes that are truly available.

Mudiay's trade value is likely less than his value as injury insurance so I'd likely end up keeping him if I was running things. He might need to be the piece that helps us land a backup center though.

I think that the idea/goal is going to be to have all of the starters playing less than you project. Save their legs a little. They used a lot of gas early in the season.

I'm not sure you want to pull your most effective guys to make a rotation spot for one dude. I think one of the guys ends up basically out of the rotation (maybe their is 4-6 minutes or something for them to eat up). Bogey, and DM are around 33-34 now... you won't want them below 30.

Its a good problem to have and hopefully we are fully healthy and get a chance to see what it looks like.

I called it with my preseason take on Mudiay:

“Emmanuel Mudiay is a man on a mission. From hell to paradise. He started as a hobbled Shangdong crouching tiger and eventually stumbled into the stagnant cesspool of knickerbocker purgatory. Young Emanuel now finds himself in Eden: the land of seagulls, shieldbacked katydids, few distractions and a gaggle of coaches ready to whip him into NBA shape. Get ready for the transformation.”

I agree with this. If it ain't broke...

Regarding the offseason and Mudiay, if the FA somewhat dry for Mudiay and we can do a BAE or part of the MLE, I think we do that. Priorities right now are Royce and JC, then Mudiay. But it's doable I think.

Getting (or retaining) a big is a top-3 priority along with retaining JFC and Royce. Anything else (in the realm of possibility) is a distant 4th.

Like I said, keeping Mudiay would be a luxury.

If you have DM and JC or Conley and JC on the court then how much is Mudiay doing? Royce might be part of that unit too if he is no longer a starter... Is Mudiay a better fit with that unit or Niang? Mudiay has been great so I think it might be him, but if we are using our financial means to retain JC and Royce how much of our limited exceptions would we send Mudiay's way.

I hope we can keep him... he's been really helpful and I still think he can get better. I think Royce, JC, and a better big are well ahead of him on the priority list.

Word. But to address if Mudiay would be worth the BAE; he absolutely would. I wouldn’t dip into the MLE to keep him though, for a number of reasons.

And I do think that is a possibility. 2 years and $7M in total is close to what I think he gets... give him a player option on the last year and remind him he may make a couple million more elsewhere but think about how much better you can get with another year of seasoning in our program. He and his representatives seem to value that.

Jazz will be playing small ball with 3 guard lineups in the second unit. Probably 10 minutes a night. Book it.

The good thing about Mudiay in those lineups is that he has the girth of a large wing. So he creates mismatches against many teams on offense, and is less of one on D when he has to guard a 3.

Wonder what’s up with Mudiay with going from a 2nd unit regular to bench warmer?

Conley came back and we now have Clarkson as well. There just aren't minutes for him when we're fully healthy.

I kinda told everyone this would happen... if he gets any run it will be the 4 minute Tucker special. It’s a good problem to have.

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think Conley is going to bring much to the team and we should try to trade him for a stretch-4 and a perimeter defender. Mudiay can do the job of the third guard.

It sure seemed like Quin and others had difficulty making a case for how Conley is an asset, saying really cliched things in their interviews.

I thought Conley looked good first game back. Mudiay is our swiss army knife, can play three positions, so he'll get his minutes.

I’d like Mudiay to take some minutes off Royce .

Royce always gets the toughest match ups and lately I think his petrol tank is on empty , we have Mudiay there to give him some rest .
