Predict what the Jazz do before July 1st

I think we will do something but it likely comes right down to the June 30 deadline. Other stuff needs to work out or teams need to know they need to move to their second options.

I haven't checked it in the trade checker yet but do we have enough space to do Rubio and Aldrich for our cap space? So cap space plus diaw. Aldrich is overpaid but is a decent backup center. His last year is mostly unguaranteed.

We have free money. Use it. It won't do us any good later.

But we have to consider how it affects us next year. It is an asset I really hope we find a use for, but we do have to be responsible.

Just threw it in the trade machine... doesn't work unless we also send Neto or Bolomboy. I like both guys as fill in minimum guys and especially just like Neto's approach and being a good locker room guy. Unlike other guys, trey burke trey lyles et al, when he is benched he stays ready and when his name is called he comes in and plays. I don't think either guy is just a throw in for me.

If we can't get Bev or Rubio then I'd look hard at acquiring Jared Dudley for space. Can play the 4 and I don't think you can have enough guys on the wing. Smart player and phenomenal locker room guy.

This is a terrible line of thinking imo.

I think you are confused about what the actual situation is. This isn't giving Evan turner a bunch of money because we can. It's just carry over money from last year that disappears. There is no downside to using it.

Lindsey even said after the draft. "We have this extra cap space until the 1st and we're going to use it."

There is a downside if we use it irresponsibly. Say we take Ryan Anderson into that space... the last two year of that deal could suck. Or if we took on Meyers Leonard... whoever we acquire will have another year left on their contract.

I wonder if we could get Harkless if we gave up a minor asset. Porty has a roster/money crunch. Would a second rounder be enough. I know they like him quite a bit. Young long good defender, can play the four, shoots it okay although I'm not 100% sold.

I'm not confused about the situation at all. Your sentiment wasn't specifically clear in what I read about utilizing the 16-17 space that still exists.

That said, let's say we do take on a contract in order to maximize the space we have. Okay, good we did that. But again, it doesn't mean we've spent that money wisely. It doesn't mean it was the prudent move when considering everything. So, again, spending just to spend isn't what I would do.

I mean if we could offer Hayward $15 million extra to stay that'd be great, but we can't.

Unless you are worried about Gail's checkbook, it's an asset with an expiration date. Everyone, including the GM has said we're going to utilize it, because it is the obvious thing to do. Using it 'smarty' is Lindsey's job.

I agree with your premise here. However there has been nothing over the last couple of years that makes me worried that spending just to spend is a problem that DL has. I think he will spend it in a way that improves the team. AKA wisely.

That is something I absolutely think needs to happen. Push, now.

Portland needs to shed a contract or they are over the luxury. I could see this being a logical trade idea:

Festus Ezili ($7.7 million contract that expires after next season) for a lottery protected pick next year. Portland is all but guaranteed to be in the luxury next season when they have a projected $138million roster. If they can avoid the luxury this year, they will avoid the repeater luxury penalties after next season.

This trade saves them a whole lot of money. A whole lot of money. It might sting a bit to lose a lottery protected pick, but they had 3 this year.

His contract is only $1M guaranteed so it saves them about $3m or so... won't be worth a 1st rounder in my opinion.

I agree. But there may be no worthwhile moves to be bad pre-7/1. It's as simple as that. And yet posters always second guess the GM as if they know what was available and what wasn't. The complaints on what we got for Kanter are a prime example of this. We hated the kid. He was a net negative. And we got a 1st rounder for him and people bitch about that, saying we should've gotten more by making a move earlier. And yet, had we done that, people would've bitched that we didn't give him a fair shake. Lose lose.

It depends on the deal, every deal has a diwnside.

You want to use the cap space for a player who adds wins with a contract that does not hurt you in the long term.

Any deal has a downside if these turn out to be untrue.

I do hope and believe the Jazz will use it. However, there is a downside--it means less money in the bank which the Jazz could use to help pay a luxury tax bill. So if the Jazz DON'T use it, but then DO go into the luxury tax to e.g. re-sign Hayward, Hill, and Ingles, then I won't complain too much.

The Jazz could combine it (or just do this instead) with Boris Diaw's contract (with Portland would then waive), which if I recall correctly is about $7 million in next year's cap relief. That's very possibly worth a first round draft pick.

So we do the trade I was thinking with Ed Davis. If they cut Davis, they avoid the luxury this year. They really can't avoid next year's luxury without major cuts. The luxury repeater tax is pretty harsh.
