What's new

Puerto Rico

Sure, the way he has gone after the NFL players protesting racial inequality is obviously racially motivated. He provided aid and comfort to the Nazis marching in Charlottesville by saying some of them were fine people. I mean the guy started his campaign with a speech calling Mexicans rapists, he's may not be wearing a white hood, but he's pretty openly a racist dude.

Birtherism.

People keep forgetting that Donald lied nonstop trying to smear obama claiming that
He as from Africa. Why? It's pretty obvious.

I don't understand why it comes as a surprise. Donald's own dad was KKK

You mean the video his interns published while he was on vacation in which he apologized for? Yeah, I did. Cry harder.
Buck stops at the top. Don't pretend for a second that video wouldn't have been put out unless those interns thought their boss would be ok with it. Also, he initially defended the video, calling it satire. I don't find his apology all that convincing. It did its job on you though I guess.

There is no proof this is true. It seems very likely imo but consistently conducting one's self in such a self righteous manner and then spouting out what may be misinformation and what certainly isn't fact isn't the best way to go.

I watched a documentary on the Aztecs and Mayan on Tuesday, while flying out to Dallas. It's weird to me how Columbus gets so much **** for his actions, but people close their eyes to bizarre and barbaric native culture.

To me, they both were savage and deserve some ridicule.

Frank, he's doing a bad job. You might find it ridiculous that he keeps getting criticised but he deserves every bit of it and more.

The bill I referenced with the loans for PR is going through congress with support from both parties, and I think its the wrong way to go. The people of Puerto Rico deserve better than to be treated like a colony.

I've been around long enough to not buy into anything that anyone not directly involved has to say. This bad job outrage is nothing new, it's par for the course. This kind of stuff flat out annoys me to the point of almost not giving a damn. Then, when the facts come out, the outraged look like idiots. How do they respond? Doubling, tripling, quadrupling, then quintupling down.

But who am I to say that the military, the Red Cross, the LDS church, the President, and the entire nation hasn't responded as fast as reasonably expected? Or, I could and sound like this *******:

Red Cross' response? If we send our first responders in before it is secure then all we are doing is sending more people in that we will have to rescued.

No power, no water, destroyed housing, washed-out bridges, ruined agriculture. Frankly, President Trump is out of patience with this sort of whining from Puerto Rico.

And while relief to the island, which Trump discovered is surrounded by water ON ALL SIDES, has been slow in arriving, Trump has been lightning-fast on the blame-shifting. That started arriving by planeload, boatload and tweetload before the storm winds had even died down. And anyway, Puerto Rico is in an ocean, a big one, and they aren’t real Americans, any more than they are on that other island, Hawaii, located in an even bigger ocean. The island that former president Barack Obama tried to claim as his birthplace in his phony bid for citizenship.

Trump says that the mess in Puerto Rico is of the Puerto Ricans’ own making. They let things go, and let systems run down, decay and break. They took the lazy way, and when the crisis came, they were unprepared, so they clearly deserve whatever level of human immiseration they now suffer. What’s left of the federal government isn’t going to save them. Trump is sending an important message here.

The message is that the United States, by tolerating the unprecedented change in political climate of the Trump presidency, is letting things go, letting systems run down, decay and break. We are taking the lazy way, and when our crisis comes, there won’t be any federal government left to save us.

The Trump White House is also an island, surrounded by an ocean of excusers and collaborators. A very big ocean.

So there sits Trump, exhaling a Category 5 gale of dysfunction and indifference to human suffering in Puerto Rico, blowing away the windows, roofs and walls of our norms of governing and simple decency. The so-called adults on the premises are doing us no favors in trying to contain the damage. It isn’t being contained. It is quickly infiltrating everything it touches, like septic water, and the rot will ensure our institutions are already soggy and collapsing when we need them in the next storm.

Wow, I could read your posts all day long. Fantastic take, fantastic prose.

Thanks, str8line, but credit where credit's due. That's Tom Toles of the Washington Post, from the article I linked to. The man does have a way with words, and it's important to tell it like it is.

Oh...yeah. Still love your take on things.

Could you imagine how bad Korea would be? Donald can't even handle a little island storm. Imagine nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula!

Even if it didn't go nuclear a new Korean war is a catastrophe. Millions will die. Possibly with in a few days. Then the chance it goes nuclear...?

Question: do you think that if NK used a single nuke somewhere that it would result in global nuclear war in the end? Or is there some version of this where that is the only nuke fired in the conflict?

I think if NK goes nuclear they go all out. If they started it I think that even Russia and China would abandon them and then they really feel their back is against the wall and they will want S Korea and Japan to be wastelands. Possibly 10s of millions dead. War would last maybe a month. N Korea, S Korea and Japan as we know them would probably be gone.

I think U.S. missile interception will have somewhere around a 40-60% success rate. I'd like to think it will be better, and by using multiple overlapping missile interception systems maybe they can get better than 80%. So if NK only fires one or just a few and/or provides a gap between launches we may just get everything in the initial wave and be able to stop additional launches on the ground through other offensive measures.

If NK acts first they are on their own, imho. But I highly doubt NK acts without provocation. My guess is that NK will do some annoying antagonizing thing, Trump will use that as a justification to strike, NK will attempt to respond (maybe successfully) and then the U.S. will quickly decimate NK's war fighting capabilities. Then it gets really complicated, because in that scenario Russia and China will be firmly opposed to U.S. troops on the ground in NK. So do we just break the regime and then lick whatever wounds we receive and go home? Maybe, who knows?

Thanks for the responses.

I was thinking more in like of full-on global nuclear war. What are the odds that a few nukes from NK allows Russia to see this as the excuse they need to launch all-out, or does China go off if we retaliate? What are the odds that this ends in a full-on nuclear-winter level global war?
