Question - Who do you pick if the Jazz get the #1 pick?

With the #1 pick, the Utah Jazz pick:

  • Kyrie Irving

    Votes: 29 59.2%
  • Derrick Williams

    Votes: 20 40.8%

  • Total voters
    49
So let me get this straight, everyone's dying to get rid of Millsap - one of the most productive players on the team and by far the most efficient and consistent (really not close at all) - because he's labeled a tweener, and most people here would draft a tweener with the #1 pick?

Amen to this. We already have a clone of Williams in Millsap. Why in the world would you draft a six foot six Power Forward? Charles Barkley will NEVER happen again. The NBA is too big for that. Look at Memphis, LA, Dallas, Boston and any other top team in the NBA. NONE of them have a six foot six starting PF (which is what Millsap or Williams are/will be). NONE. Williams and Millsap do not make a championship team.

I would take Williams unless we can get an impressive enough established star via trade. I am confident that Williams will be an excellent small forward in the NBA and could easily see him as a fringe all-star in 3 years (maybe 18-20 points, 4 boards, 2 assists and a steal per game while playing above average defense). However, Irving I see a wider range of risk. He could be a Chris Paul or a role player that just can't quite get over that hump.

Jimmer.

Or both Morris twins.

Or some euro (and bring him in sometime in the future).

Or we should draft some Kardashian.

For the people clamboring for KOC to shop the #1 pick, I just don't see that happening, unless you're talking about trading it for a future #1 (no restrictions) + a filler (Wes Johnson? Varejao?) - no thanks. Ray Allen to Boston for the #5 pick (Jeff Green) is the only example of a team trading away a star for top draft pick that I can remember, and Seattle only did it because they thought Allen's best years were behind him (boy were they wrong) and they wanted to accelerate the rebuilding process. The beauty of draft picks is that they are relatively cheap. John Wall is getting paid between $5MM - $6MM for his first 3-4 years. So the question you have to ask yourself is do you want to have a Irving, Williams or Kanter at $4-$6 MM for 3-4 years or do you want a Marc Gasol that will most likely be getting $11MM-$13MM for 5 years? Granted a lot of this can change with the new upcoming CBA; however, I would be very surprised if drastic changes are made to the rookie scale. Maybe KOC can figure something out, but if we get the #1 pick I would start saving up for your Irving jerseys.

How can we be so sure O'Connor even wants Irving? Wasn't Chris Paul (Irving) almost unanimously considered the higher pick, but O'Connor went with the bigger Williams (Knight)?

I wasn't necessarily saying that it's a lock that O'Connor has Irving #1 on his board (I merely used Irving as he is the consensus #1 pick as of right now by most "experts), but my main point was that if we get the #1 pick, KOC will use it on whoever he has as his #1.

Yeah, but lets think hypothetically. O'Connor has the 1st pick in the draft. Let's say his man is Kanter,Knight, or someone who is probably going to be available at #3. At the #2 and #3 draft slot there are two teams who want Irving. Couldn't O'Connor start a bid war for the pick between those two teams if he knows his guy is going to be there at 2 or 3?

I think it's definitely a possibility but I don't think you'd get much for swapping #1 for #2. In that scenario the other team would have a good idea that we don't want Irving and they might give up something for #1 (future 1st rounder, 2nd rounder - which is better than nothing) to secure Irving. However to trade #1 for #3 you could probably get something much better. I trust KOC and he might not be able to pull something off like this, but I'm sure it's much harder to do than we realize. But let's be honest - if Stern picks a Jazz ping pong ball for the #1 pick, he's throwing it back in until he plucks a Cav ball from the lot.

For those who think KOC should trade the #1 overall pick - there's a reason the top pick hasn't been traded in over 15 years. Either there's a future franchise player in the draft who's so promising that the #1 team would be foolish to pass on him, or there's nobody great in the draft that other teams would risk overpaying to select. The #1 overall selection carries such pressure that other teams are much more willing to overpay for the 2nd pick because it doesn't bring as much pressure should the pick fail.

If Utah wins the lottery, I would tell the world that we're taking Irving before Stern changes his mind.

If Utah gets the number pick, Ill just be one happy Jazzfan. And I think they might beable to get a great amount of value for either the 1st or 2nd pick. Becasue of the drop off in talent from #2-3. Wouldn't surprise me to see the Bobcats offer up both there picks to get a higher pick. And I think I can see Sacramento trading there pick. And drafting Jimmer with a later lotto pick.
