Questions about Locke's report on pre-camp scrimmages

I know this is a product of being starved for Jazz news, and that the importance of these questions is infinitesimally small, but a couple things seem odd about Locke's latest report on the Jazz: https://1320kfan.com/index.php/story/read/question_8_what_are_the_utah_jazz_players_doing_right_now

"Today the guys had a full 5 on 5 game. The players in today’s game including Deron, Ronnie P, Paul Millsap, Francisco Elson, Godon Hayward, Jeremy Evans, Al Jefferson, Ryan Thompson, Sundiata, Jeffers. I believe one or two more may have been there as well."

Is Locke just mailing in this report, or is he really not sure if there were others? Why would he not name others he knows are in town? Would the one or two others be training camp invitees or just local talent to get a few more bodies in the gym?

" The coaches and team are not allowed to be involved until training camp starts."

Is this true? I had thought that it was only the case that the team couldn't require players to show up before training camp.

If this is more than just a rushed, fake report, it is good to hear that Evans's athleticism is impressing the players.

Interesting story. I'll go ahead and paste it here in full, since you've already included the link:

Most of the Jazz players are in town and are working out. Each morning they have a game at the practice facility. Then most of the players put in extra work in the afternoon.

Today the guys had a full 5 on 5 game. The players in today’s game including Deron, Ronnie P, Paul Millsap, Francisco Elson, Godon Hayward, Jeremy Evans, Al Jefferson, Ryan Thompson, Sundiata, Jeffers. I believe one or two more may have been there as well.

The talk amongst some of the guys was the athleticism of Jeremy Evans. They say he is an absolute pogo stick. The other thing people were mentioning was what a nice young man Evans is.

To some extent training camp already started for these guys. The coaches and team are not allowed to be involved until training camp starts.

This is an important time of year. The leadership of the team significantly impacts the quality of these workouts. In addition, the atmosphere is more relaxed and allows the players to forge the beginning of relationships.

For the new pieces of Hayward, Evans and Jefferson this is an important time to show their teammates what they are capable of doing and who they are as people.

Glad to hear that; thanks for the post!
I've always thought TC was way too short; this kinda makes up for it a bit.
Hmmm; Miles should be there. Raja and AK are seasoned vets, so I'm not concerned with them.

I know that in college the coaches can only be involved with the players for specific amount of time practice time each month and can not be involved in unofficial practices at all. I dont think the same thing is true of the NBA however. They just cant have official or mandatory practices.

Saying the coaches cannot be involved in anything is not correct.

Here's a video taken two weeks ago of the Heat's coach running Lebron, Bosh, etc. through drills

https://www.nba.com/heat/video/2010/08/27/LeBronworkout-1401068/index.html

Does anybody else wonder after watching that video how often Star players get told what to change about there game by there coaches?

Lebron seems uncomfortable when the Erik Spoelstra is telling him to change his first step. I could easily be wrong about him being uncomfortable. But Lebron's last coach Mike Brown was a idiot in interviews and didn't have much structure in the offense. And I wonder if Mike Brown was ever critical of Lebron?
I bet a lot of coaches don't dare to tell stars to change something.

Mike Brown is a hack. Lebron was the coach of that team.

If that were the case, then LeBron certainly isn't ready to be a coach ... and I think his recent decision to publicize his "Decision" was ample evidence of that. But again I believe you're making another, flippant sarcastic comment

No I'm not. I'd bet good money that team listened to Lebron before they listened to Mike "COY" Brown.

I remember during the playoffs a few years ago. They asked Mike Brown what his game plan throughout the game and he said "give it to Lebron". He was dead serious. And he always talked about having a structured offense was bad. That doesn't work in the playoffs.

This is also true. Put Lebron on a team with a balanced team and a system and he goes to another level. And for the record, I don't think the Heat exactly embody balance or a system. It's going to be a bunch of iso crap but it's going to work because there are going to be so many potent threats off the ball to relieve pressure and keep the defense honest.

Glad to see Evans and Thompson there. Neither has a contract, which tells me they want to be on this team and will do what it takes to EARN that 1st contract!! We all know from reports both these guys got some talent...

Evans is a second round pick so I am not surprised he is there and Thompson was invited to camp but it is nice they are there early. I like both players and hope both can make the team.
