What's new

Quit whining, and just let Al Jefferson's contract play it's course??

I expect Al to average .5 more assist per game this year because of the addition of Mo and Marvin.

There is a reason there aren't many traditional centers in the game. There aren't many NBA offenses set around trying to get the ball on the low block to the center. Yes, Big Al hesitates before he makes his move. Yes, Big Al doesn't go to the line enough. Yes, Big Al doesn't stop his man on defense. What Big Al does is take his time on the low block and he can usually get his shot off against anyone. We have a center that is a 20ish and 10ish guy and we give the guy nothing but grief. We forget that Big Al hides a lot of obvious weaknesses on the Jazz team. There is a reason why Ty loves him so much.

If we keep Big Al to the end of his contract, I guarantee you KOC will give him another offer. If he accepts the offer, the explosion on this board will be AWESOME!!!

-Transition offense
-Transition defense
-Guarding anyone not as slow or slower than him. At all.
-Pick and roll, using other players' help, or playing with any fluidity whatsoever
-Getting to the god damn free throw line
-Shooting below 50% for his career and being considered by half-wits to be something other than a chucker.

Even if we're to believe that Al is a more able and more willing passer, he has yet to even SCRAPE these issues. And this doesn't even take into account that we have two #3 picks languishing on the bench so he can put up his 18 or so shots per game and play 38 mpg.

I'd rather have Monta Ellis. Al has the honerous distinction of being the death-blow to the Deron and Sloan era and now a road block to greener pastures. I'd love to get something nice for him, but just being rid of his stink is worth pursuing. That's probably the reality anyway as we got him for scraps and it seems there are no takers on the market.

And I don't believe the Jazz suddenly become world beaters with Al gone. But for Christ's sake, at least the Jazz can work on having an actual offense again. The last two years have been the most painful "Jazz" basketball - offensively - that I've seen.

He probably said that jokingly, poking fun at himself.

He didn't. I know you have to play that card, but for all intents and purposes (that it took him the better part of eight years to figure out that one of the fundamentals of basketball exists), it's not a joke.

If we have to wait eight more years for him to learn to recognize and work on one of his other fatal deficiencies... I don't even know how to finish that thought.

I agree. Sounds like he was also implying he maybe didn't have any outside shooters he could pass to. Last season, I think he knew if he passed the ball out, he better keep his eyes open so the subsequent airball wouldn't hit him on the top of the head.

Big Al is getting better at passing the ball. He averaged a career-high 2.2 APG last year, and had a career-high AST%. I wouldn't be surprised to see him average 3 APG next year, especially if the team's 3-PT% improves.

OMG 2.2 ASSISTS A GAME???!!!?!?!? he must be the best passer ever!!!

If you seriously think Al is going to improve passing ENOUGH to even make a difference in the ENTIRE season, you are a moron.

A couple of things.

1) His defense is awful. That alone lost us at least 5 games last year.

2) Favors IS READY. He showed that when Al went down and Favors averaged 16 and 12 with a 20 pt 16 reb game.

3) Al's offense, while great on an individual level, kills this team. It takes everyone else out of their game, so we are playing 1 on 5 on offense. I don't want to waste another year of Favor's and Kanter's development to see if Al can learn to pass at his age. It would be a lot smarter to see if Favors can play the post than see if Al can pass (which we know he can't). Which brings us to our last point:

4) KOC has an 18th pick invested in Al. He has two top 3 picks invested in Favors and Kanter. The Jazz have to find out what they have for their future, and Al ain't a part of that.

Al has no future on this team.
The future of this team is Kanter, Favors and maybe Millsap.
Play your future, especially when you future is already better than Al (Favors and Millsap)
Al is your third best big man.

1. Define "Enough"
2. Chill - I never called Big Al a great passer, I just provided evidence to show he's getting better. Nothing more, nothing less.

1. "enough" He averaged .4 more assists this year than last year. Thats not even an extra assist more every other game. Do you really think that changes the game at all?

2. Do you think that the .4 more assists is worth it to keep him on the floor taking minutes from Kanter and Favors? Do you think that .4 helps validate us spending 14 million on him?

I think there's reason to believe he'll keep improving. The lightbulb over his head FINALLY turned on: https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-...figured-shooters-help-him-open-001412437.html

How many years is he into his basketball career? Gotta be getting close to 20 years. This sort of thing should be pretty intuitive from an early age for guys with any b-ball IQ. BA has little b-ball IQ.

Same issue basically with his passing: yes, thinking about it more and making an objective effort to pass more will help. But generally the good passers just have a feel for it, a sense of what is happening on the court and making the appropriate play. I think BA has to actually count the guys guarding him out loud to know when to pass.

I don't think Al should be traded this summer. I would wait to see the growth of Kanter and Favors first. If they prove that they have grown and can play significant and consistent minutes, then it gives you the option to move Jefferson. If they are still struggling to stay on the floor, then I would keep Jefferson for the season and maybe beyond. What I wouldn't want to happen is for the Jazz to hold onto him for too long, knowing that he is not part of their future and let him go for nothing like they did with Boozer. The moment they knew Boozer wasn't part of the future, they should have traded him at the deadline.

if al isn't traded, favors and kanter's growth will be limited.

Big Al played in 65 games, counting the playoffs. In wins he averaged 2.375 apg, while in losses he averaged 2.061. A little bit of extra passing can make a difference over the course of a season. You ask if an extra .4 apg makes Big Al worth $14 million. No, but being a great teammate and helping Favors and Kanter develop, and leading the team in points and rebounds make him worth it. The Jazz outscored their opponents by 87 points over the course of the season when Big Al played, and were outscored by 74 when he was on the bench. If nothing else, Big Al is helping the young guys learn how to win. I think he'd be fine seeing fewer minutes per game to get more minutes for Kanter. I think the Jazz will be better next year and in the long run if they keep Big All for next season.

Do you actually watch the games? The Jazz offense is horrible with or without Al. Blaming him for a complete lack of execution is just plain ignorant. He can't pass out of triple teams when the other four players fail to time any cut or screen.

Posting up Al is the only semblance the Jazz have to a modern offense at this point.

Do YOU watch the games? Al is a black hole. There is no ball movement, because once he gets the ball, it's not leaving his hands until he shoots it or turns it over. He's had brief flashes of sanity where he realizes that passing is a viable option, but the majority of the time he holds it until the possession ends.

I like Big Al, I know we'll miss his scoring... but I don't think he's worth his contract. And I have to believe that whichever teams lose out on the Dwight Howard sweepstakes will come calling.
