Quotes from the Houston Rockets forums- "avoid this jazz team at all cost, we just can't beat them"

Are you saying all countries outside of the USA are 'Third World' countries?

I don't think that's right. The NBA also expanded into Europe, Australia, NZ, etc, I don't think you can say those countries are 'Third World'.

Also I'd much rather use the word 'developing countries' rather than 'Third World'. We all live in the same world, it's not like people in poorer countries live in another world.

Great, thanks for nitpicking and arguing semantics.

Still, for all the money, you can't ignore the fact that people who used to watch NBA 25 years go aren't watching it as much now. There's got to be a reason.

Who cares why old people dont watch teh NBA anymore?

Is that NBA perfect no? Is it better than it has ever been? By a huge margin.

I dont give a mother**** why people who enjoyed watching 80's basketball don't like watching it now. Go watch baseball.

It's not about old or young people. People in general are not watching the NBA as much as they used to. Ratings are lower than 20-25 years ago. If it's better than it's ever been, why are the ratings lower?

I dunno if you meant it, but for the record I thought I needed to point that out.

Definitely worth pointing out as his argument has terrible logic and reeks of "Since I dont like it no one else must like it" attitude.

Yes, use a graph that stops in 2013. Great job.

Crazy how every sports TV ratings have dropped since the 90's since people dont watch TV as much. I watch maybe 20 regular season games a year on TV while most of them I watch online, often illegally, which I doubt get tracked and I'm certain a lot of people, especially young people, do.

Unlike your Trump logic that if they're up for one year, the overall trend must be up.

Here they are with 2016 included.

Oh wow, the NBA is ****ed. Let's change the rules to appeal to the 60 year olds who watched in the 80s.

Awesome argument. Ad hominems and other logical fallacies.

Meanwhile, here's Super Bowl ratings. Sorry they end in 2015 and aren't as up to date so you could quickly change the topic once I post up to date ones.

NBA should implement a 1 game playoff system so more people watch.

It's not about total numbers and you know it. It's about the steady rise.

But instead of being obtuse and calling me names, perhaps you can offer your opinion on the metrics that show the product is better.

TV ratings are outdated, just like your opinions.

I don't think using TV ratings is helpful since people are now consuming content via smartphones, ipads, laptops, etc.

I think a better gauge would be 'Total US Revenue adjusted for inflation' (if you want to discard growth outside the US).

Does that information exist? If it does it could help in this discussion.

I'd be interested to see how many people here watch the games on a television. I bet over 50% of the people here use the internet to view games, and I bet at least 20% do so illegally.

Cuz huge cable contracts means the product is restricted to those that can afford it. You start by cutting out a 1/3 of the potential audience. The Jazz used to be broadcast for free to everybody in Utah and Idaho.

I think this is a lot of what has happened with the NFL. It used to be that every person in this country no matter how broke or how bored they were on Sunday could at least sit down and enjoy 10 hours of football. The NFL got too greedy and a generation later it's biting them in the ***. The NBA should expand their weekend ABC programming.

The revenue is up, but again, the question is why. Sponsorship revenue is up, and TV money is up. As I said, TV numbers are down and had been going down since all computers were used for was Minesweeper. Actual average attendance is down in the past 10 years, and gate receipts as a percentage of revenue are down and have steadily being going down.

All metrics point to people watching less NBA, both in person and through devices. Regardless of how many jerseys are sold, what does that say about the product itself?

Have you got any evidence supporting this claim highlighted here?
