What's new

Quotes from the Houston Rockets forums- "avoid this jazz team at all cost, we just can't beat them"

I think we should implement a death penalty if a player gets caught flopping. That would solve the problem.

I never realized how salty people are over this, it's insane.
It makes the games really long and boring. I don't know a solution for the way it's done. But I do believe they should address it. Maybe just eliminate continuation on all jump shots. If you have already released the ball then you can have 2-3 FT's otherwise it's a side out or a normal 2 shot foul.

Having the NBA actually call illegal screens and enforce that rule would go a long way, but would hurt Rudy Gobert. Half the time these guys are drawing those types of fouls it's because after the offensive player passes the screen man moves into the path of the defender without ever getting position and they don't call it.

Also I think people are salty about it today because we just played against the guy who abuses the rule more than anybody in the history of the league.

Part of what makes the NBA the best sport's league in the world is the contrast of styles from team to team, player to player. I don't like watching Harden do his foul drawing techniques, but at the same time I appreciate/respect it in a way because it offers another contrasting style to the NBA. It makes it that more gratifying when we beat them. Was the last air-ball he shot not fun to watch? Was it not fun to beat them? Was the game boring in your opinion? Not everything about a sport is going to be pleasing to watch to all fans. I'm sure a lot of fans dont like watching Jazz/Grizzlies slow down tempo and grind a game out.

So your solution is to just not guard him? Because if your within 3 feet of him he's going to jump into you and get the call.

I'd say the solution is to run him the **** over. You want to stop just to draw that foul? Well let him know that if he does your going to plow through him and it's going to hurt.

And FWIW he didn't even try to make a single one of those shots last night. And on a lot of those fouls last night he simply wasn't fouled and the ref called it anyway. Just because there is contact does not mean it is a foul, basketball is a contact sport, he shouldn't get those calls just from a little bump. Like I said before, if the ref is going to call it why bother trying not to foul him? Just run through him, great you fouled him that was going to happen anyway the way the ref was calling it.

Cy made a good point - don't reach. Just guard him the way you would normally, don't reach, and see if Harden makes the shot.

If he doesn't - then you win. If he does make the shot, then maybe it's worth gambling with the reach.

Either way, I don't see why the rules as it stand needs to change. It's just a game of cat and mouse. That's what we're here to watch. That's the game!!!

Just to be clear: I think there were some BS calls against Harden that game, not saying it was perfectly reffed. A majority of them were properly called against Harden tho and it was clear as day when they were about to happen because you could see Hood reach in and make contact.

My bigger issues was with Lou Williams and how he drew the first two fouls against Exum who played near perfect defense on them.

Ok, I was just speaking generally.

You guys are way OT. But, I think this argument of whether the NBA is more popular now compared to the 80s/90s is an interesting one. I'd like to see more people get in and add their two cents so I'm adding a new thread to General Sports.

What do YOU think?

to put this thread somewhat back on topic, you're doing the Lord's work here JazzAvenues. The Lord's work, no hyperbole (ok, some hyperbole).

How salty do yall get when Hayward gets fouls called on head flops?

Hayward is doing that way less this year. Last year it drove me nuts cuz it isn't fun to watch.
Harden does earn a lot of calls but he also gets the benefit of the doubt/******** calls too often. If I could add one rule to the NBA it would be a "spirit of the rules/game" rule. Basically the ref isn't a damn motion sensor. He is interpreting your actions and intentions and making calls accordingly. The letter of the law isn't what's important to me. The end product is. If Harden is attempting to actually make a 3 give it to him. If not he'll No. I don't want to watch him hook a players hand with one arm, throw up a crap shot, and then shoot FTs. The NBA changes the rules to allow players more movement so that the game was more exciting. They didn't change the rules to make it less watchable.

I remember watching things like the mid 90s finals wig slow post up ugly assed basketball. Unskilled very physical types like Charles Oakley, PJ Brown etc. no thanks. Lost interest in the NBA for quite a while when it was all about huge guys with limited skill repeatedly backing in to the rim in the post. Today's game of ball movement, skills, shooting is beautiful to watch in comparison.

No the solution is dont reach in. You have to guard him with your body, not your hands, which Hood was having a tough time focusing on. It's just a habit for players to reach in and you can't do that against Harden.
The refs do in fact often call fouls when you guard him perfectly though. Calls that they wouldn't call the same if a player like hood was the one with the ball.

Superstar calls (preferential treatment) is a real thing and bothers me.
Offensive players who jump into guys when the defender is doing everything that can to avoid contact bothers me. Flopping bothers me.

Perfect defense often gets rewarded by being called a foul and that bothers me.

Having said all that, less jim is a dumbass.

Agreed, that was horrible. Games of 67-64 where no one could get off an uncontested shot. Ugly Pat-Riley-ball. Glad it has changed.

That said, it can be improved. Harden is very often clearly ONLY trying to get a foul call. I don't like that. That is not the way the game should be played nor the way I like to watch it being played.

Look at what Hood is doing. The dude keeps reaching right into Harden's shooting pocket. He is basically begging for Harden to draw a foul. Not only does Hood reach with a consistent repeating rhythm, Harden sees that he is doing that and purposefully dribbles and walks the ball up with a slow pace to lull Hood into a false sense of safety, then times Hood's last reach with a lighting quick shot attempt.

I think Hood might be trying to bait him into going up for an attempt, thinking he can pull his hands back in time, but Harden is too good at doing this. It's a legitimate foul call and one that only he and few other guys can get because of their hand speed and how closely defenders have to play them.
