Racism and privilege

Dis foo says he is from Iowa. He's obviously white. There are nothing but caucasians in Iowa tbphwy

Stopped reading when you brought up the civil rights movement. White people aren't supposed to talk about it.

Given that I specifically said that I have no problem with you talking about what the Civil Rights movement means to you, that's about the level of dialogue I'm coming to expect in thread. Way to live down to expectations.

You shoud recheck the demographics of downtown Davenport. I lived on seventh street. I'd show you a picture of the house, but it's since burned to the ground.

This is getting ridiculous.

Telling me that I cannot interpret king is not an argument. An argument would be for you to explain to me why my interpretation is wrong.

I don't think I really tried to "interpret" King anyway. I only used him as an example of someone that had a call to action. Someone who was proactive. I could have easily used Ghandi, but since we were talking about race in America I thought King was more appropriate.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to heyhey again.

I consider this to be an astute response, considering the "dialogue" that has gone on in the past few pages. I also love humor.

also, people who've never been hated can not be allowed to speak authoritatively on their own opinions, either. . . . . .

Expectations that you yourself set.

I agree it was not an argument, just a little advice. Frankly, I'm not going into a lot of detail about why it's wrong to interpret King as de-emphasizing the " 'The white man is keeping you down' " message, there are plenty of King's speeches and works available.

JazzSpazz also tried to use Ghandi as an example of someone who didn't engage in strong, angry, accusatory rhetoric, and I supplied him with a list of easily-found quotes that showed otherwise.

Consider this: if your knowledge of King, Ghandi, etc., have come primarily through the mass media, then who has been interpreting it and filtering out what they consider relevant? I'm not suggesting any evil intent, just the natural way that people think the parts that move them are the parts worth repeating.
