Racism and privilege

From way back when you were aintnothin' and got an infraction for posting 5 times in a row?

FWIW, aint posted much more than five times in a row. that was truly an extraordinary case.

I think MF's feud is one-sided. For some reason he's focused on me but I've been a mod for a long long time and so many posters have accused me of singling them out that it's hard to even rile up enough passion to deny it anymore. Morefeasts isn't even in the top 30 of posters that have tried to antagonize me at some point between 2003 and now.

Of which I think we have seen a dramatic acceleration of with our and our children's generations. Long, long overdue.

I think you'd be shocked at what younger generations deem acceptable. I had to stop playing League of Legends entirely because of hate speech.

No, that's a bad sign. Inequalities exist, and they are very much structural and not individual. Not focusing on race just maintains the status quo. When I hear middle-class white kids say "Oh, I don't see race, I just see people," I wanna punch them in the stomach, kick them to the ground, then stop on their stupid little skulls until they pass out. I'm pretty sure we're all supposed to develop object permanence by the time we're two.

Just because you "don't see" racism, it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Whether you are personally racist or not has no bearing on the conditions on the Tsúùtínà reserve a block from my house.

I absolutely disagree. focusing on race is the problem. only when it is truly irrelevant will it no longer be a problem.

Can we apply this to other issues in our society? If we just don't focus on them, they'll go away?

Plus, telling someone to stop focusing on their culture in order to "solve problems" is a little insensitive.

Good thing that is not what I said at all.

The accusations of "race baiter" are a favorite tactic of people who want to continue to benefit from racial privilege, even if they hold no personal animus.

This argument has merit as a fanatical counterweight to right wing fanaticism, IMO. Counterweight arguments are counterproductive, as Gameface's insulted response to your accusation proves.

The actual number of people leveraging race for personal gain is far smaller than the number of accusations concerning it.

Point scored, but this doesn't have any bearing on the discussion.

1830's: White person named "Ryan Johnson" is able to own a slave, treat him like property, pay him nothing for labor and enjoy protection by the laws of the state for his status.

2010's: White person named "Ryan Johnson" is more likely to get a job than equally qualified "LaShawn Perry" because of latent attitudes about race and class.

Do you have anything to show that this is a significant issue today? I'm not saying it's not, but in our corporatized world it's harmful for institutions to discriminate for any reason. The mom and pop era of the 60's -early 90's could have easily benefited but things are way more competitive (lean) today to hinder your institution by discriminating. This is possibly the reason that the female wage gap mainstream yammering is complete garbage. No reason for me to think that a black wage gap exists either.

To repeat myself, framing the issue in racial terms is not the way to effect change. The problems are structural, not racist.

even if racism magically disappeared today there are other realities that carry a certain inertia that would keep many poor black people in the situation they're in.

The end of racism and the end of white privilege would not necessarily mean all black people enjoy the quality of life that the average white person has.

QFT. It's no wonder it came from an open mind.

Entitlement and accountability are more of an issue, which include every race.

Thinking something is owed to you because of "blablabla" and always having someone or something to blame because something did not go your way and you didn't get what you want.

The surest way to fix problems is to not dwell on the problem, and not to tell other people how to act... but to show other people how to act and to promote the solution every day in who you are.

And what do you do when there are ten gazillion bad examples and scant few good by examples? The lack of your solution is very much part of perpetuating problems. How do you change that?

We will only really know racism is gone (one way or the other) when it is no longer a regular topic of conversation.

This post makes me cringe almost as much as reading a Thriller. It's like kids raised in racist environments that are overcoming are supposed to all be philosophers living 40 years beyond their years. **** growing up and brain development, the children are all supposed have been born with GOD knowledge.

GTFO.

Rightish politicians and media haven't been racist either? Methinks you need to turn into Foxnews, AM radio, or listen to Bro Beck. It's not even constrained to just "conservative media" but religion as well. One should also visit their local caucus here in Utah (Utah County in particular. The comments made at the GOP caucus here in Utah County about the Utah Compact were outrageous), ward, or even local BYU University. Or did I just imagine that this happened last year?

My point is, a few people may point about racism in regards to Obama's critics (which... Anyone objective would admit that this has led to a surge in criticisms and critics. Hell, lets not act like asking to see the President's birth certificate was just an accident). The right(ish) is completely expert in racism. The right trying to accuse the left of racism is like Shaq trying to make fun of someone's free throw shooting.

Does your wife enjoy it when you spit in her face ranting all this stuff that's stewing inside of you? Retaining all this while waiting for a chance to vent can't be healthy.

Then it won't be a topic of conversation, will it?

Can't be healthy reading your posts with so many quotes and blabber. I know I know, we should all be celebrating the great economy given to us by the policies of St. Reagan.

Could you imagine trying to convince the right to stop talking about sex education, abortion, public school vouchers, entitlements, and gay marriage?

Gay marriage and abortion will just go away if you just stopped talking about them!

I don't know who shoved a stick up your arse, but I'm 30. To me, university students are kids.

I didn't pick that example out of a vacuum. There have been multiple studies measuring the exact effect of having a "black name" on resume callbacks and/or job placements. Here's an example of an NBER one that I picked on the first google search.

https://www.nber.org/digest/sep03/w9873.html

Obviously I agree that discriminating is actually long-run harmful for companies. I've read the studies about discrimination, in effect, imposing a luxury cost on companies that practice it. As a practical matter, however, that type of analysis rarely influences real decision makers strongly. I wholeheartedly believe many who pass on the "black name" in favor of the "white name" would be described by those who know them as non-racists in virtually all contexts.

Ha. Fun question.

Aint is the clear #1. It's not even close. The guy did just about everything he possibly could to make life on the board hard. Possibly the most skilled message board troll I've ever seen.

Archie probably did the most things that were overtly mean-spirited, but he seems to have matured over the last few years.

Around 03-04 we had a poster whose name presently escapes me but he used to constantly send me PMs asking me to "play his skin flute" and asking if I'd like to go to his "meat buffet."

EDIT: It was hearsky!

Number four was probably Clutch 385. He was pretty out of control in complaining about me for something like a year. He even once insisted I was using moderator powers to personally find out his name and personal identifying information. This wasn't true, but he was very obnoxoius about it.

For Number Five I'm going to cheat and group together everyone that had weird issues with me over gay marriage related topics in 2008 and 2009.
