CJ Chenier - I liked the song, and I like zydeco, but I thought that performance was poor. Bad mixing. 7/10 for the song, 3/10 for the video/performance.

In honor of the King's passing:

The Thrill Is Gone is an all-time great song. 10/10 since it's a classic.

Something new from one of my favorite bands:

You know I am not a big fan of live music videos. I love live music when I am there, but listening to it I prefer the studio versions. But something about BB King's performances just transcend all that. He was great.

My Morning Jacket...really liked it 8/10. YB you keep introducing me to some good new music.

I felt like keeping with the blues for a bit and thought I would bring in one of the greatest losses in the world of music, when we lost Stevie Ray Vaughan. Not sure there has ever been a better guitarist. Here is one you don't hear as much, but I love the instrumentals on this one.

As a kicker you can check out this sound check. Great stuff.

I didn't listen to this much. Somehow it didn't get my attention but it is pretty good. 8.5/10.

Aprhodite's Child - The Four Horseman
7.5/10 - this sort of reminds me of some of the tracks off Quradrophenia by The Who, but I actually think I like this better

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic whatevers - Home
8/10 - really like this song, except for the real orchestral part in the middle, but the chorus is catchy

here's Marcia Ball - if you have the chance to see her perform, take it, she puts on a really good show
(there's probably more in itunes that's not available in music video format)

La Ti Da - 6/10. Fun song.

Another new song from one of my favorite bands, I love the slow build and then the change at 2:20.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oib0a2_itA

Alabama Shakes - Gimme All Your Love

4/10 - maybe it's better live, the first 10 seconds had promise but I didn't like the screechy vocals after that. The best part was about 2:30 - 3:30, but overall, I didn't really care for it. Though it became more tolerable after repeated listening.

now for something totally different - an amusing little ditty...

Sutton Foster is a big name in musical theater on Broadway - this one does sound like a Broadway show tune, but I couldn't find a connection to any musicals

Air Conditioner - Sutton Foster
OK, well that was a bit hit!!!
I give it 6.5/10 - - she has a good voice, it's a cute and toe-tapping little ditty, with amusing lyrics

ok, going Old School now...
give this a listen
(and check out a 36 year old David Letterman)

(I really like the way he gets the audience involved in the second half)

Sly Stone. Generally a fan, not big on that particular song. 6.5/10

Now back to Germany...these guys started an entire music movement almost single-handedly and in the early years were way ahead of their time. The movement is called die Neue Deutsche Härte. Rammstein is a more well known example of this type of music, but they owe these guys for kicking it off. I give you Oomph!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pLdlCI2XNI

Oomph is pretty good - 7/10.

I prefer Laibach, who said, "Rammstein is Laibach for children."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zSRcFxZVAA

I will let someone else rate Laibach, but I like them, and have for a while. But one interesting thing, it highlights a common theme in this kind of music, the use of counting. There are so many songs in this genre that use counting, I can think of songs by Rammstein, Leibach (of course), Oopmph!, KMFDM, Eisbrecher, Eisenherz, Schock. I am sure there are others.

Laibach - Tanz Mit Laibach
5.5/10 - - I liked the way it started but then it got too repetitive for my taste

(I preferred Oomph over this. And just wondering, what genre is this? And is the genre unique to German music/rap?)

a little change of pace, this is a local (Chicago) young man, now working primarily in LA and touring worldwide

Here you go Moe.

The germans in general, even the fans of this kind of music, don't really use this term. It is somewhat analogous to New Wave or Grunge or what have you. It really encompasses music with very hard down-tuned guitar and a fairly strong electrical music influence. Sometimes it is called German Techno-metal, which is more descriptive. The fans, and the bands, generally refer to it as metal or rock simply. And yeah it is more strongly represented in German I think. It also has usually has a strong macabre influence, or maybe better would be to say a counter-culture vibe, like the seedy underbelly of society that we know is really there in the dark corners, so to speak. It also often has a strong political bent, especially in bands such as KMFDM, which itself is an anti-government saying of a sort in German, which is "Kein Mitleid für die Mehrheit" (which means "No Pity for the Majority"). Sometimes they switch around the Mitleid and Mehrheit to make it more ironic-sounding. KMFDM is often very outspoken against the "establishment".

Anyone of our German guys, or who live in Germany and are familiar with this kind of music can correct me if I am wrong. This is mostly my take on it.

For me, I like the hard guitar and the other-worldly sounds from the techno influence, and the general beat. And it all sounds angry, even in songs that really aren't, which I find interesting.

Here is a decent example of counter-cultural lyrics along with the techno influence on the metal music. Eisbrecher: Supermodel

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8ZJarJnxBk

(This is NOT an official video, but it fits the song ok. Fan-made.)

Here are the lyrics. Found an english translation that is pretty good. First the german.

Blaue Augen, blondes Haar
samt und seidig wunderbar
Luxuskörper, hart gestählt
Blaue Augen, blondes Haar

Velvety and silky, wonderful
Luscious body, hard-toned

Black skin becomes fair again,
and in a pinch the scalpel helps.

A closer look at your cleavage,
A little date in the private room,
End of the line for girls' dreams.
Here comes the supermodel power-engine
Mind a ruin with passion!

Nothing's left, just a beautiful body.

Thanks for the explanation. Techno grunge-rock sounds like a good descriptive name for the genre. Or skinhead punk, but it is much darker in tone that what I consider old school punk rock.

Now would somebody please rate the song I posted?

Really torn on the Vic Mensa. He seems talented, but the song rubbed me really the wrong way - just set my teeth on edge for some reason. So I'll call it a 4/10.

This guy is really considered a national treasure in Britain, but it almost unknown in the States.

Paul Weller - You Do Something To Me

Paul Weller - You Do Something to Me
4/10 - I kept waiting for the song to really "kick" in, but it sort of teased me into thinking it was just about to get to the "good" part, but never quite did - or didn't sustain it long enough. He reminded me a bit of Harry Chapin.

was going to post something else (something a bit older, indie-rock from the 80's) but decided to go with this instead

I'll go with a 6/10... Reminds me of the band Haim a little bit. I liked it though.

Here's my new favorite artist. Leon Bridges.
