Rep is dumb.

I walked early... before my femurs were completely calcified. Relevance?

You didn't specify a relevant question, but merely another.. but thanks.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but yes it does change everything. It changes the meaning of my statement by 180 degrees (or by 360 degrees if you're Karl Malone).

Saying "Your opinion is wrong" means I believe your statement to be wrong, and I'm rudely telling you so.

Saying "Your opinion is wrong ;-)" means that I acknowledge your right to your opinion is as valid as my right to my opinion, and while I understand many people on the internet will rudely tell others that their opinion is worthless, I'm not one of those people.

The two statements couldn't be farther away from each other.
With all due respect, communication is not this simple. Take any simple sentence and when spoken, it can be construed in at least a handful of different ways depending on where the stress or emphasis is in the sentence. And to take it a step further, many people, when speaking said hypothetical sentence, may think they've spoken in the most benign of ways when in fact they are being a very bitchy, condescending or patronizing jagoff. It happens all the time. In short, people can't hear themselves speak.

The same is also true of the internet. We become so desensitized to our own style of writing/typing that we can't truly hear ourselves. So what you think may be just fine may not be when directed toward others. In this particular case, you may think the emoticon changes the meaning as you say. Others may feel it reeks of condescension but you, the typist, may not recognize it because that tone is so intrinsically engrained in your nature. It's who you are.

With all due respect.

it all makes me wonder when and where this rep thing lost its cool factor. Seriously, what happened??

I think being against rep was way more hip than being for it ever was...

are you trying to discredit me or to discredit rep? Can't tell. Where's Dalamon to interpret the purity of your motives?

Neither. Just saying I don't recall there ever being a crowd singing the praises of rep power, but I have seen many cry against it.
