Franklin's post contained nothing but the sloppy reductions of a self-made economist who gives very little serious thought to religious history. I'll pass on your suggestion to refer to that post.

Having an arguement without reading what the other side is saying is a pretty foolish thing to do. But hell why not. You will not be the first, nor the last, on thsi board to do so. I simply think that if you are claiming a name such as Mexican-America, Irish-American or African-American that you should be a citizen of both. At that point wouldn't it be more along the lines of Ghanan-American, Nigerian-American...than African AMerican. That is the same as saying European-American and South American-American.

I think it's interesting that someone with your level of education feels empowered to declare such a ubiquitous and important term as African American as "stupid." Very interesting.

again, why the **** should national boundaries determine how we refer to people? Do you realize how sloppy and blunt this practice is? There are millions of people this excludes or endows with multiple hyphens. If you don't understand why it isn't "natural" to use national boundaries, then you need to read and travel more.

You're doing a disservice to sons and daughters of slaves in your attempts to whitewash the deeply ingrained effects of slavery and racism from their culture.

Nope. Because my position adds those effects to a cultural matrix that was brought from Africa. You're the one doing the erasing when you ignore that matrix and explain all black culture in economic terms.... as if all my people were merely slaves.

It is stupid because of the way it is used. Should I start running around calling myself a German-Swedish-Welsh-American? No? Why? Because it is stupid and I have no ties to those countries, their practices, customs of culture. I am as tied to them as your random, everyday black american is to Africa. If we are labeling based on origin then it should be based on origin of the individual and not there ancestor 5 generations back.

But you already know this and want to have some fun. Please continue.

You realize that you could accurately refer to yourself as European-American instead of that national mishmash, right? You realize that you personally celebrate the institutions and model of common sense inherited from Europe, right?

You realize Africa is a continent not a country, right? And that its people had their own practices which weren't annihilated by the middle passage, right?

Just because the term is poorly used by some, it doesn't become a stupid term. If those were the standards for declaring stupidity, then all terms/words would be stupid. 100%
