Rewatching 30+ year old TV shows to see if they hold up.

First up is Parker Lewis Can’t Lose.

It still works. My kid immediately understands the characters and dynamics with a pace he doesn’t get bored with. Watching this show is oddly similar to watching anime. The only thing holding it back is the 4:3 aspect ratio of the picture.

Corin Nemec is okay as Parker Lewis, but Billy Jayne as best friend Mikey is a scene stealer. If you’ve ever seen the 80’s movie Just One of the Guys, he plays the main character’s younger brother and steals every scene he’s in there too.

Bonus points for the girl Parker Lewis tries to win in the pilot episode being a very young Mlila Jovovich.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century was strange. It is like the first episode is from one show and all the other episodes are from a different show. The casting was great. Gil Gerard was fantastic as Buck Rogers and Erin Gray as Colonel Deering was all sorts of hotness. Col. Deering found a balance of feminine and assertive that is rare these days.

Pamela Hensley as villain Princess Ardala isn't hard on the eyes either.

The pilot episode has some mature themes, but all of the episodes after it seem aimed at a much younger audience. The first episode is enjoyable still, but the rest of the show wasn't written for me.

If I'm being honest, this one made my rewatch list based on the opening theme alone.

Hardcastle and McCormick is still pretty fun, but I see it now through very different eyes. This show was about Milton Hardcastle who had a d-bag moron sidekick. and they would being cartoony villainous villains to justice using a very fast car.

One thing that really caught my eye was how 80's show producers would craft a scene. In the continuous camera shot below, Hardcastle is explaining to McCormmick the plan of how to catch the villain as they walk along a path. It goes like this:

Sooo..that was the plan. And it worked. They caught the bad guy. Random girls strolling around in bikinis and heels must be good luck I guess.

A fun show I re-watched recently was Remington Steele.

I would like to see Moonlighting again but it has copyright issues with the music so you can't find it.

I remember liking a show called Riptide as well.

Why is this thread so horny?
The shows are reflecting the culture of a society that had sex, and they leaned in hard to gender roles because that is what viewers wanted.

If you can find a woman who came of age in the 1980's and who will be honest with you, ask her about the romance novels she read when she was in high school. It was straight up porn.

The premise of Remington Steele was a time capsule in and of itself. A talented woman can't get society to take her seriously so she created a male nom de guerre and suddenly the world was at her feet. It was just that society wouldn't give a woman the same chance a man got. The idea seemed plausible back then. Feminists try to sell that same idea today and it just comes across as ridiculous.

As for Moonlighting, it is on my list to watch. Maybe next week. My copies are only 480p but that seems to be the best quality available.

The original MacGyver is completely unwatchable. They started showing re-runs of it here a few years ago and it was a ****ing awful experience.

The X files is enjoyable

You just don't understand it's sophisticated plots and nuanced production. A brilliant masterpiece. My favorites are episodes with Penny or Jack, or the both.
