Initial thought is that he must be stupid. But maybe he's looking to hop on board with a team that can get their hands on a couple of top tier guys, regardless of pay. Or it's becuase of the new CBA. Players want the security of years on a contract not the dollar amount. After the 2011 season its a good chance the league goes to a lock out. Get your 3-5 year contract in now, and when the season comes back your grandfathered in with your contract.

Now the Spurs can't use his expiring as a trade piece if they planned on it lol.
