FANTASTIC article on the subject. CAUTION: Do NOT read if you are allergic to things such as the truth.

Recognizing that your team isn't a serious contender to win a championship isn't just not unusual: It's standard operating procedure. How many teams heading into the 2014-15 season honestly believed they had a chance to win it all? Maybe six? Cleveland, Chicago, San Antonio, Golden State, LA Clippers, maybe Oklahoma City? (Memphis, Houston and Toronto have emerged a bit this year.) Everyone else knew exactly what they were dealing with. But none of them were nearly as honest about it as Philadelphia, with themselves and with their fans. So they didn't pretend. They continued to strip it all away. They are trusting their fans can deal with some down years -- some very down years -- if it means they will be legitimate championship contenders down the line.

There is no guarantee that this will work, and all told, it might well not. To create an actual championship team requires more than just a solid plan and talent evaluation skills: It requires a ton of luck, everything falling in the right place at just the right time. Real life punches plans in the face real fast. Also, the NBA already has a rather foolproof anti-tanking plan in place: The draft lottery itself, which, I remind, does not actually guarantee a team with the worst record the top overall pick. (And tanking doesn't even guarantee the worst record: Remember, Milwaukee had a worse record than Philadelphia last season.) And it certainly isn't much fun to watch, or to pay for: NBA.com's David Aldridge had an entertaining piece last week in which several season ticket holders tried to grapple with what, precisely, they're giving up all this money for.

But it's a plan, and it's the best bet there is, anyway, for a team like Philadelphia. It's a clear process. The 76ers are developing talent. Noel, Michael Carter-Williams, Joel Embiid and Euroleague MVP Dario Saric, along with whomever they get from the next few drafts, could make up the foundation of a potentially terrifying team. I'll confess, as a Knicks fan, I'd love to have that much young, cheap talent in my pipeline.

Guessing you couldn't see/feel the sarcasm dripping off of my post?

Yeah, I thought it might be sarcasm, and I'm usually pretty good at remembering which posters are for/against aggressive rebuilding, but it makes it hard when some posters keep changing their names. Not pointing any fingers.

Detroit has a huge chemistry problem this year, and I'm not talking about the school subject.
