Rondo Withdraws

I kind of took the opposite view of Rondo not playing versus Spain. I didn't see the game, but obviously it was a close game and they started off horribly so I kind of thought that might have elevated his status as a key player more than anything. Kind of surprising, actually.

That team is so iffy though, especially if KD has an off night. I'm not sure we are going to win this thing.

Is it just me, or does the final US roster suck?

It's a return to the B-list style rosters we saw in the early 2000s.

The 2002 team looked like this:

Elton Brand
Antonio Davis
Baron Davis
Michael Finley
Raef LaFrentz
Shawn Marion
Andre Miller
Reggie Miller (37 years old)
Jermaine O'Neal
Paul Pierce
Ben Wallace
Jay Williams

Nick Collison was an alternate

Ouch

Interestingly, the 2008 roster for USA mens basetball lists a point guard that plays for the Jazz as "Dwight Williams" and apparently Mr. Williams and Carlos Boozer both list Salt Lake City as their hometown. Who knew?

The announcers made some good points today. It wasn't necessarily that Rondo was worse than anybody else 8-12, they just needed to clear him out so Derrick Rose and Billups can run the show. Nobody named Curry or Westbrook are going to be too butt hurt if they don't play, Rondo wouldn't have been the same.

In other words, he would have been more of a team cancer than Allen Iverson was to the 2004 Olympic Squad. Keep in mind that Allen Iverson was widely praised for being willing to sacrifice parts of his game for the sake of his teammates. If you're coming off more selfish in international play than Iverson ... wow.

Rondo has too many weaknesses...I'm be surprised if he did as well on another team besides the celts

That's just plain stupid. Too many weaknesses? Does he rebound? Yes. Does he dime? Yes. Does he take the ball hard to the rim and score? Yes. Does he steal the ball with his large hands? (They're larger than Yao Ming's btw) Yes. Does he continue to dominate triple doubles? Yes. Is his shot a little iffy? Yeah, but you gotta be a pee cobbling moron if you think he wouldn't do well on any other team.

I think similarly, but that could be said for a lot of players on a lot of teams. The situation randomness of professional sports is a big deal, which is precisely why guys like Lebron/D-Wade/Bosh are trying to control that whole element.

This. Not to mention Rondo's probably the best defending point in the league.
