Yes, Jazz are still paying Luther Wright, he's a preacher now. PJ Carlisimo still ought to be booed at ESA harder than Boozer, D-Will, Jimmer and Fisher combined.
Torrey Ellis cracks me up because Deron was the #3 pick and the freaking point gaurd for the Utah Jazz. Everybody knew who we was. And Robert Whaley was so uncleaver that the only name he could come up with was a shortened version of his own first name and Deron's last name.
Stocton's Halloween Brawl I messed up royaly. Jim Les was complaining that he was better than Stockton and should play ahead of him. He pouted enough the jazz eventually cut him, but he never fought Stockton. However, Bart Kofed clocked Bobby Hansen at a
New Years Eve party in 1989.
During a New Year's party in the early hours of 1989, Jazz fifth-round pick Bart Kofoed and starting guard Bobby Hansen got into a fight. Kofoed, known for being a tough player, broke the cheekbone of Hansen, who missed the next month of the season. According to Steve Luhm of the Salt Lake Tribune, following the... " incident then-general manager Dave Checketts cited a "...clause in his contract that requires him to act in good citizenship and good sportsmanship. For violation of that clause, we're going to terminate his contract because he struck one of his teammates and caused significant damage and damaged the team." Kofoed was released from the team two days after the incident."
The Ostertag and Jerry story was told on the radio by Larry H. Miller himself. In the couple of years before he died he did some very candid and sometimes rambling interviews on Jazz Talk. He told a story about walking into the locker room during half-time of a game where Jerry was extremely upset. Jerry was at the chalk board facing the team, Tag was near the back of the group and was icing a knee or back or something with a plastic bag of ice. In his critique of the first half Jerry was pretty abusive of Tags effort or performance. Well, Greg got pissed, Jerry was pissed, Greg hurled the ice bag at Jerry's head. Jerry ducked out of the way, the ice bag hit the chalk board and exploded all over the locker room. Jerry continued on his rant without skipping a beat, but moved onto other players.
LHM, I miss him, then went on to explain that Greg and Jerry were actually pretty good friends despite several explosions from each of them, and talked about Greg going to Bobby Sloans funeral.
Jeez 2 straight years of jazz rookies getting into trouble. Torrey Ellis and the next year pillow fort in Portland. What was Robert Whaley's name again?
I think this is the key to understanding the current Jazz culture, for a couple of years there it seemed like the Jazz were willing to overlook some of the character blemishes in their young players, draft picks, and end of bench guys. IMO the Torrey Ellis and Pillow Forts put an end to it. I believe that LHM told KOC to clean it up, and they have. So when you see things like the Jazz drafting Hayward instead of Paul George or Klay Thompson, blame the pillow forts.
