Roster Building From Here - FA and Summer of 2023

ECF isn’t nothing.
It was basically nothing. Sixers melted down more than anything. They’ve done absolutely nothing since.

Blazers and Dallas made the conference finals recently. Did those mean anything? Trading for Trae because he made that ECF years ago is silly as hell. We have a much bigger body of work to use every other season.

It might be if it’s lightning in a bottle or otherwise context-dependent. I basically don’t count the Jazz’s trip in ‘07. Nor should Portland fans count the Blazers’ trip in ‘19.

They quite literally were on the verge of going up 2-1 in the ECF before Trae stepped on a refs foot and hurt his ankle.

You can make excuses and asterisks for anything. Nobody is trading for Trae specifically because he made an ECF don’t be obtuse.

Okay, well anyone else is welcome to blow their wad on a player type whose apex in the history of the league is getting spanked in the finals and never sniffing them again.

I’m good with the Jazz trying to build a real team that lasts.

I think it is a great year to have three 1sts, a grab bag of useful players that are likely replaceable, and three teams in the top-10 desperate to keep their supermax/franchise players.

Nobody is suggesting blowing their wad. If it was 2-3 firsts I would definitely consider it.

The heart of the problem is he can’t exist within an offense, he has to be atop it; and that he makes it impossible to play elite defense.

In other words, he is a fine floor-raiser but he actively lowers the ceiling of any teams he’s on. And I actively do not want him. It is not a question of price, it is a question of how to build a lasting champion and short of being a 6th man I don’t see how Trae would be a part of that.

So we don’t want Dame or Luka either right? Since neither of them have done anything winning wise and both of their WCF’s appearances were fluky?

Luka has some of same warts, but if you’re a red giant level star then it can work. It’s also a lot easier to hide a 6’ 8” dude on defense or for him to step up on that end and for him to be generally very effective for a very long time. Trae is not at fault for being tiny but it also doesn’t change the fact that it’s a serious problem (especially with the way that he plays).

Danny liked IT, Kyrie, and Kemba.

Chances are he likes Trae?
He likes value… trade one pick for IT on a bargain contract, 1 pick a broken player and a role player for Kyrie, Kemba was a FA signing.

If FVV is available or Trae is available for 2 firsts… I can see him making a move but it’s about the value not necessarily the player size/type.

That seems like a stretch.. how did each of those tenures end on Danny’s teams? Saying he likes or would still like those kinds of players doesn’t feel like an assumption we can still make.
It's not that much of a stretch. It's DA going after 3 small scoring/ball dominant guards in a relatively short stretch. I've seen people make a lot bigger stretches over DA's preferred player type.

I do think we're in la la land pretending that we wouldn't take Trae for free. Come on now.
I’m mostly saying I wouldn’t. Because I wouldn’t. And if I were to backtrack, I would only do so under the idea of flipping him.

If you could situate him to be the one of the greatest 6th men of all time, that might be another. But none of these scenarios exist in reality so it’s all whatever.
