Roster Building From Here - FA and Summer of 2023

Sell off who? Why would they sell anyone? Not like they have their own draft picks to tank for.
Good point, I was forgetting that. I just think they are in a little bit of no man's land with some good, but not great pieces. I guess mostly I was hoping they would put Mikal on the market.

It was always genius. I laughed when they reported they were looking for a first for him. Joke was on me when they found one.
Royce has been good for Brooklyn this year, especially back when they had KD and Kyrie and were looking like a playoff contender. We ended up with pick 28 out of the deal, which has a good chance of not even being a rotation quality NBA player.

I think the deal was good for both teams. I'm not sure why people keep acting like it was the craziest/most genius/most surprising trade in the history of the NBA.

Well, for one Royce is terrible. For two, look at the trade deadline where nobody was giving up firsts. Guys like Eric Gordon and Luke Kennard went for second round picks. Zero shot Royce goes for a first at the trade deadline this year.

How many seconds do you think we can get for pick 28?

DFS should be available this summer and the price should be lower than it would have been at the deadline. We will see how the draft goes but I can see the Jazz revisiting that scenario

It was crazy because guys who hold a lot more value than Royce weren’t going for first round picks. Guys like Jerami Grant we’re going for picks like that. If you’re looking at comps, that deal is an outlier, regardless of how much people want to play up Royce as “criminally underrated.”

Well we couldn't get a first for conley. Or bogey. Or clarkson. So I think people find it strange that we could get one for Royce as most people think he is the worst player of the 4.

When the trade was made it wasn't for pick 28. It was an unprotected first round pick. Didn't have a number attached to it. When people talk about it being a great trade or act surprised that we were able to pull it off they are talking about trading Royce for an unprotected first round pick, not for pick 28 necessarily.

He wasn't traded for any first round pick. It was a pick that was very likely going to be almost a second round pick.

There is always the chance for injury. Embiid goes down for a couple of weeks and that pick ends up in the teens.

Based on the structure of the pick (worst of BKN, PHI, HOU) it was very likely going to be a very late first round pick. I don't think we get the pick otherwise.

People must have short memories here. I remember a different player playing awesome down the stretch only for Quin to pull them for Royce and Royce sucking. Happened so many times with House last year.

A minor correction, we would be picking in the low 20's for Brooklyn, but yeah it was a good trade for us, I've said as much. I just don't think it was some amazing trade, but I also value Royce more than most.

Sure. But did you see what happened to the nets? Have you heard of embiid injury/health history? Likely late first but a decent chance of Kyrie being kyrie (that happened) and embiid having a bad injury or health issue (missed on that one darn it.)
I thought it was a good trade at the time but never thought it was some amazing all time great trade like the donovan and gobert trades. Now that we know the pick I think it was an ok trade.

Royce on a good contract and he fills a lot of needs for a playoff team.

Which is still great value. I forgot the specifics, but Jerami Grant was traded for a protected pick, too.

I mean, yeah. Because the Jazz scooped 20% of the 1st rounders available to trade last off-season.
