Round 1: Jazz MUST use big lineup against Spurs

Step one: do not cheat on defense off their perimeter scrubs (Bonner, Green, Neal). Popovich probably has these guys shoot 500 threes a day from the same location and hit at around 43%. They are the real threat.

Agreed play our best 5, damn the torpedos. We suck against them under any circumstances, make them adjust to us. Prove or disprove Milsap cannot play the three.

...we can do all the lineup changes and maneuvering we want. At the end of the day, we will win 1 game in this series and be out.

I think we need to sit Jefferson if we want to win. He's just going to be too much of a defensive liablilty as San Antonio will just involve him in PnR after PnR with Parker and Gino. And as we've seen he's horrific in that situation. It's going to be a layup drill for San Antonio if we leave him out there.

Best case scenario is probably 2 quick fouls on Jefferson.

I'd go with

Harris
Hayward
Carroll (he's better than Howard IMHO)
Millsap
Favors

with

Jefferson
Tinsley
Kanter
Howard

Off the bench.

But, that's not going to happen. I hope the coaching staff spends the next few days working on how to give Jefferson help on the PnR, because that's going to be where we lose the games.

Paul Millsap, Utah Jazz
Utah polished off a strong second half of the season with a win over Phoenix to fill the West's last playoff opening. It's already been a successful year for the Jazz, who are really just in the second phase or so of a rebuilding process. It's reminiscent of the 2003-04 Jazz, which finished 42-40 and just missed a playoff berth in the first season after John Stockton retired. Now comes the hard part: a matchup with a red-hot Spurs team that knocked them off in three of four meetings during the regular season.

That said, the Jazz have found some success using Millsap at small forward, and that configuration worked well in limited minutes against San Antonio. Millsap has been Utah's most effective rotation player during the four meetings with San Antonio, and a lot of the success can be attributed to the big lineup.

It's only based on 15 minutes, but groupings that have included a frontcourt of Millsap, Al Jefferson and Derrick Favors have outscored San Antonio by 62 points per 48 minutes. That wouldn't hold up for a full game, obviously, but given that Utah is playing with found money, it would behoove Tyrone Corbin to see just how far that configuration can take him.

Works for me.

I'm not so sure the big lineup works against the Spurs. Spurs have tons of shooters. And they're so drive and kick that Sap will be kept at the perimeter which neutralizes his rebounding. I'm sure if Pop sees the big lineup he'll keep the floor spaced with shooters and see if Harris/Hayward/Sap can keep up.

I get the Memphis size argument, but Memphis had Allen and Battier to secure the perimeter which seems to get forgotten. Nobody we have qualifies on that level.

doesnt favors(and to a small degree ion limited minutes kanter) make up for the rebounding we lose with sap at the 3?

Wait I thought this thread was supposed to jinx us? How did we win with a thread like this?

Maybe someone at the Suns message boards made an even bigger jinx thread. And maybe the mods over there allow pron and talk about people's sexy body parts. When you enter into the world of mystery and mysticism it's hard to tell up from down sometimes.

I'm saying the opposite. We've benefited from Sap's rebounding at the 3 against the teams I watched (which greatly helps the defensive numbers.) But San Antonio keeps 3 shooters spaced on the perimeter at all times like few teams do. My guess is Pop will instruct whoever is being defended by Millsap to stay far outside on Parker's left (since Parker likes to drive right). By extension, Parker will always drive/PnR to the opposite side of Sap on the right side. When that happens, Parker has main options to the right while Sap gets drawn out to the top of the key in the rotations. The higher out you get Sap on a consistent basis, the more vulnerable your are to getting burned by him as a wing.

We'll see. I just don't like the SA matchup and, more specifically, Pop's ability to exploit its weaknesses.

We must have Favors in there as a starter. Without Favors there is no one to protect the paint. If we are being honest this isn't going to make a huge difference, but
it will put us in the best position to win. It will make a difference, but they will still tear us up. It will just will be easier to watch with someone in there to deter them.

As far as a series with the Spurs goes I would be happy with 2 awesome home wins. Please don't get swept. 4-2 or 4-3 and everyone is talking about the rosey future ahead.
