What's new

Rudy is the greatest Jazz player since Karl Malone.

No.

Karl screwed up in the clutch a few times, and he was less likable than Stockton. But Malone was way more valuable than Stockton. Malone was a beast.

I liked Stockton more back then too, but I've grown to appreciate just how good Karl Malone was.
I agree
Malone > stockton

Hey, I just found what Gobert's signature pose should be after a blocked shot. We all remember the Dikembe finger wag. Well, in keeping with the times, Rudy should just let the player know he shouldn't have shot, by giving the universal "Don't Shoot" pose.

While browsing for Gobert pics, I found this one. Very disturbing, but oh so amusing. My apologies to Rudy.

th

Well done

Premature. There is a countdown thread going comparing Rudy to all the great centers of the Jazz past. How can Rudy be not quite as good as Memo or Ostertag, but as great as Malone?

Rushing to a declaration like this takes all the pleasure and enjoyment out of watching Rudy unfold before our eyes. Allow the process to play out, and wait until he is the greatest player since Malone. Which at the rate he is going should be sometime in early march.

No. I don't have to do what you tell me. I can declare Rudy great at anytime. I don't need a bunch of meaningless accumulative stats to tell me he's better than a bunch of scrubs no one even remembers even played for the Jazz.

I was at the game tonight and at one point noticed Gobert get in someones face. Was it Speights? Gobert has some nasty in him and his upper body looks pretty beastly in person.

He is already pretty chiseled. For his body type he isn't going to get much bigger. He has an Abdul-Jabbar type of build with more shoulders : Sure the legs are wiry, but he is already big and strong for his type and shouldn't be made to get bigger. those extra 10/20 pounds of muscle some might want him to had could have many negative effects : higher injury risk (more weight on his limbs, more pull on his joints and bones because of the stronger muscles), slowing him down (sure better man to man defense, but worse zone and help defense which are a lot more useful nowadays), etc...

To me he is already at a peak physically. What you want if you are the staff if from now on for him to stay healthy so that he can play, keep fit so that he can stay active for those 30/35 minutes he will play and just developp a bit more strength in his hands. Physically I wouldn't do anything further.

Rudy's greatness is infinite... no beginning and no end.

I agree with this. He can get stronger, but i wouldn't want him much bigger. I think Hibbert is one of the few players that will give him trouble because he has size and girth. I think it is critical for big men to watch their weight as their knees and feet take so much impact. I'd add 5 to 10 lbs of muscle and not much more than that.

Not even sure : Tim Duncan had gotten quite big in the early 00s to bang with O'Neal and it took its toll on his body, a part of his longevity (well a small part compared to his brains and fundamentals) is that he lost 15 pounds around 2009 to still be able to be competitive despite a bum knee. Maybe without that extra weight he had added, the bum knee doesn't happen, or later...

For me Gobert is now big enough, any further weight is a risk.

I totally agree with you on your philosophy here but I do think Rudy could put on a healthy 2-3 pounds per off-season. It doesn't sound like much but an extra 15 pounds of muscle could do wonders five years from now when we're in the NBA Finals.

My point is that Rudy has reached a point where, to me, you don't want to have him try and put on more mass and weight on purpose "to get bigger" because he is big enough for what he needs. With age he is likely to gain some weight (not all players do though), and that's ok. 10 pounds more age 30 if it came naturally is not a problem. But I wouldn't want him any bigger. He is already strong enough to hang with the Boguts and Gasols out there and his nimbness allows him to cover so much space so quickly. There is nothing to prove that those 10/15 pounds more don't slow him down just a fraction. Add to that the injury risk, I'll pass.

Typically getting stronger also means getting bigger. He's a professional athlete. It's not like he can get stronger through neural adaptation at this level. He'll need more muscle mass.

I know, this is why I would chose NOT getting stronger to avoid getting much bigger. except for some freaks of nature like Shaq, mass is really a big big danger to big men.

I think most of Rudy's weight is in his long freakin arms and hands so we should be okay :)

Honestly... I think he could add a few pounds (and likely will... its just nature) in his base. I think he is strong enough in the upper body. If he had a stronger base it's help with him getting pushed under the basket on rebounds and help him hold his position on both sides of the floor. He doesn't need an overhaul though. I wouldn't do anything that affects his mobility.

It's funny when guys post him up because they can mover him, but he's so long that when they try to go up over him he still blocks it. Seems to happen once a game.

I'm beyond stoked about him... team him up with Favs and we actually have an identity.

THIS!!!

Troll thread title should be changed to Is Gobert the best Jazz bench player since Paul Millsap circa 2008.

Hopefully Rudy can grow from a bench scrub like Sap in 2008 to a solid 6th man like Sap in 2010 to an All Star like Sap in 2014.

All the weight alwasy ends up on those two legs, knees and feet anyway ;)

I hope he keeps his body the way it is, this isn't the part of his game that needs improvement !

How old are you? Before my fathers generation they believed this myth that you lose nimbleness. Then the Karl Malones came along and shattered it. Muscle is almost always beneficial it takes a lot of mass before it gets in the way. Mass doesnt slow you it inhibits range of motion (look at Bolts legs theyre huge and he ain't slow). Rudy is far far far away from that threashold. He needs to add mass and a lot of it.

I totally get your point but adding muscle and therefore weight does not simply add into slowing someone down. At a certain point, sure, but almost all great sprinters (I think you'd agree that they're very quick/fast) are jacked.

I am not saying to put Gobert on a 10,000 calorie diet, 3 hour/day lifting regimen. But a very solid weight-training program and diet could help him gain a solid 3 pounds, 2 in his legs, 1 in his upper body...or thereabouts...and still maintain that quickness with the chance of actually improving it.

I also understand that that extra weight over the course of 30 minutes/night and 82 games would be a concern but again as long as that weight is gained naturally, imo, he should be fine. It's when guys put on 25 pounds in four months that their body is in for trouble imo.

I think an extra 15 pounds would work well for him. That's not much on a 7'2" frame. His lower body should be the primary focus IMO.
