And I think Burks in more of a vacuum is very suited for this role. However, with THIS team, we may have an ample amount of wings that can handle the ball, but we're short a 3&D guy. I know the Jazz defense has been bonkers since Kanter got dumped, but bear in mind that it's late season, and why wouldn't we want to be able to improve the defense anyway? Also, with the floor-spacing issues of having Gobert and Favors (and especially if they don't acquire a big that can stretch the floor), I'm not sure that having a guy whose bread and butter is crashing the hoop is the best idea ever.

Like I said, I really like Burks. I won't fantasize of trading him because I'm not even sure what I'd want or what he'd fetch. But I'm not sure he's the right fit considering what he (generally) brings and what he (generally) doesn't. Besides, with Hood's skillset he's showing, couldn't he be a great scorer off the bench anyway? Wouldn't that maybe be a good step for him to take?

I agree with all of this. I think Burks' role may end up as a backup SG with a stretch 4-5 for a different look with the backups. One of Favors or Gobert will be sitting and have a stretch 4 in the game with a PG and SF who can also shoot and I think Burks could thrive in that role. It all really depends on him. But I prefer what Hood brings to the starting lineup over Burks. Especially since the trade. The space Burks found early in the year will probably be non-existent with our current lineup. Improvement from Exum could help this but I doubt it will be enough next season.

Good points, but it's not like Burks is entirely inadequate while shooting a 3 (35% career, 38% this year before the shoulder) and he's no slouch on defense either. Why look for solutions outside when such a 3D guy might already exist in-house? I think Hood has more upside and is probably our starter next year, but I'm not inclined to write Burks off.

I'd drop Burke and have Burks run the point off the bench before I would say that Burks is the odd man out. No way in hell his PG skills can be worse than Burke's and we already know Burke sucks as a SG.

Yeah, if Quin wants to keep developing this multiple ball handler attack, just give Burks Burke's minutes. I don't hate that. BUT, Burks may be a competent 3-point shooter on not that many attempts a game, and he might not be a putrid defender, but a 3&D player he is not. Even remotely. He is a guy that uses a significant amount of possessions (usually attacking the rim, which is a good trait in many circumstances, but THE SPACING) and doesn't guard anyone particularly intelligently.

But maybe things change. But it's going to be really hard to go after DMC/Middleton/Green/Matthews AND have Hayward, Burks, and an emerging Hood that will demand minutes also. If they can get Johnson then everything's peachy, but rarely do things fall into place like that.

Defense would be a concern with Burks and Hood playing together. But I do think Snyder has been considering something like that. Hood is often the one bringing the ball up court.
